Chapter 12 - The Second Boy

The entire grand ballroom fell into an unnatural, breathless silence, broken only by the rhythmic hissing of the emergency sprinkler system. Water cascaded down over the ruined wedding cake and pooled around the polished marble floor, but nobody moved. Every eye was locked on the small figure standing in the smoke-filled threshold.
It was an eight-year-old boy in a miniature tuxedo and silk bowtie, holding a pristine, untouched slice of wedding cake on a paper plate. His messy light brown hair was damp from the indoor rain, and his big, hopeful hazel eyes blinked slowly as he scanned the chaotic room.
Clara dropped the silver dagger. It hit the marble with a dull, heavy clatter, rolling into a puddle of water. Her breath hitched, her chest heaving as natural panic and overwhelming maternal instinct tore through her controlled exterior. She took one shaky step forward, her eyes darting between the boy standing near Marcus and the private parlor where Thomas was currently guarding the other child.
"Leo?" Clara whispered, her voice cracking as unshed tears finally spilled over her long lashes.
The boy near Marcus tilted his head with a gentle, slightly foreign cadence, completely different from the sharp, anxious demeanor of the son she had raised for the past eight years. He took a small step forward, clutching the paper plate tightly in his pale fingers.
"Mom?" the boy asked softly, his voice trembling with a quiet vulnerability that pierced straight through Clara’s soul.
Across the room, Thomas rushed out from the private parlor, dragging the first Leo by the hand. When Thomas stopped at the edge of the ballroom and saw the second boy standing across from them, his jaw dropped in absolute disbelief.
"What... what is this?" Thomas stammered, looking back and forth between the two identical boys. "Clara... there are two of them."
Marcus Vance let out a low, satisfied laugh, stepping aside to reveal the identical reflection of the children across the room. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a manila envelope stamped with a genetic testing lab's logo, tossing it carelessly onto the wet marble near Clara’s feet.
"Identical twins, Clara," Marcus announced smoothly, his grey eyes gleaming with malicious triumph. "When Beatrice engineered the nursery swap eight years ago to secure the family trust, she didn't just take one child. She split them. One was left with you as an emotional anchor, and the other was sent to a secure facility in Zurich as ultimate leverage."
Beatrice Vance let out a high-pitched, hysterical laugh from her spot on the floor, her makeup completely ruined by the water pouring from the sprinklers. "We had to be certain! You can't trust anyone with Vance blood, especially not an outsider like Clara who thought she could buy her way into our dynasty!"
Clara ignored Beatrice completely. She dropped to her knees right into the cold puddles of water, ignoring the expensive beige evening gown clinging to her skin. She opened her arms wide, looking at both boys standing at opposite ends of the ruined ballroom.
"Come here," Clara choked out, her voice breaking with raw, unfiltered love. "Both of you. Come to Mom."

Both boys took a synchronized step forward, but before their small shoes could touch the center of the dance floor, the heavy security windows along the side of the ballroom suddenly shattered inward in a massive explosion of flying glass and splintering frames.
