Chapter 9 - The Final Stand on the Tarmac

Julian stumbled backward, howling in pain as he clutched his bleeding nose, his fingers instantly slick with crimson. Maya didn't wait to see if he would recover; she shoved past him through the open office door and bolted out into the main hangar bay.

Outside on the tarmac, the situation had escalated into absolute chaos.

The red flashing lights of multiple airport security cruisers suddenly illuminated the perimeter fence, casting strobing crimson and blue beams across the Gulfstream’s fuselage. Victor was standing near the landing gear of the jet, holding Elena at gunpoint while a squad of armed security officers swarmed the area with weapons drawn.

"Drop the bag, Elena! Don't move an inch!" an officer bellowed through a loudspeaker, his voice echoing sharply across the concrete apron.

Elena dropped her leather handbag instantly, throwing her hands up in surrender while glaring with pure venom at Victor. Julian staggered out of the hangar behind Maya, bleeding from the nose and screaming hysterically.

"Shoot him! That man has a gun!" Julian pointed frantically at Victor, attempting to turn the tables on his former boss.

Before the security officers could process the conflicting threats, a sleek black unmarked sedan smashed directly through the airfield’s outer security gate, tires squealing in high-pitched protest as it drifted across the tarmac and skidded to a halt right beside the jet.

The rear door flew open, and Mark stumbled out, looking disheveled and frantic, his eyes immediately locking onto Maya as she ran out from the hangar doors.

"Maya!" Mark cried out, sprinting across the tarmac past the bewildered security guards.

Maya stopped dead in her tracks, clutching her canvas backpack tightly to her chest. Her father reached her in three long strides, wrapping his arms around her with a fierce, desperate intensity that knocked the remaining breath from her lungs.

"I'm sorry," Mark choked out, tears openly streaming down his face as he buried his face in her dark hair. "I am so, so sorry. I didn't know. I swear to God, I didn't know what they were doing."

Maya looked over her father’s shoulder. Federal agents in tactical vests were swarming Julian and Elena, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto their wrists as they cursed and screamed. Victor stood calmly by the jet’s wing, lowering his weapon slowly before tossing it onto the concrete and offering a subtle, knowing nod toward Maya.

Before Maya could speak, one of the senior federal agents approached them, holding a clipboard and flashing a gold badge.

"Are you Maya Sterling?" the agent asked firmly.

Maya stepped back from her father’s embrace, lifting her canvas backpack and unzipping the main compartment.

May you like

"Yes," Maya said, her voice ringing clear and steady across the tarmac. "And I have everything you need to prove my father’s innocence, and take down the entire syndicate."
