Chapter 8 - The Metal Box

The interior of Hangar Four smelled sharply of aviation fuel, hydraulic oil, and ozone. Towering shadows cast by stacked crates and spare turbine parts loomed like ancient monoliths in the dim emergency lighting.
Maya darted silently toward a small, glass-walled flight planning office built into the corner of the hangar. The door was unlocked. She slipped inside, shutting it quietly behind her.
The room was sparse—a metal desk cluttered with aeronautical charts, a rolling office chair, and a heavy grey steel lockbox bolted directly to the floor beneath the kneehole.
Maya dropped to her knees on the cold concrete. Her hands trembled violently as she pulled the heavy brass key from the pocket of her grey hoodie. She slid it into the vertical keyhole of the lockbox. It fit with a precise, mechanical click.
She turned the key clockwise. A heavy internal spring released with a satisfying thunk.
Maya lifted the heavy steel lid. Inside lay a thick stack of physical paper documents stamped with international banking seals, alongside a black micro-SD card labeled in Julian’s unmistakable handwriting: Project Titan - Master Ledger.
She reached down, scooping the documents and the microcard into her canvas backpack.
Suddenly, the glass door of the office swung violently open.
Maya gasped, spinning around on her knees. Julian stood in the doorway, his chest heaving, his face slick with sweat. He wasn't holding a weapon, but his eyes were wide with a manic, desperate fury.
"You stupid, miserable little bitch," Julian snarled, taking a threatening step into the small room and blocking the only exit. "You just don't know when to stay down, do you?"
Maya scrambled backward until her back hit the metal desk. She kept her hands inside her backpack, her fingers curling around the heavy metal base of a stapler.
"It's over, Julian," Maya said, forcing her voice to remain steady despite the terror gripping her chest. "Victor is outside. The police already have the server logs from the house. You lost."
Julian let out a shrill, hysterical laugh. "Victor is a dead man walking! You think he cares about your family? He’s using you to get the leverage he needs to take over my entire operation! And once I deal with him, you're coming with me on that plane whether you want to or not."
He lunged forward, grabbing the front of Maya’s grey hoodie and hauling her violently to her feet.
May you like
Maya didn't scream. Instead, she whipped her canvas backpack forward with all her strength, smashing the heavy contents directly into Julian’s jaw with a sickening crunch.
