Chapter 4 - Echoes Across the Wire

The burner phone vibrated sharply against Maya’s leg, breaking the suffocating silence inside the moving sedan. The screen illuminated with a single incoming text message from an unknown number: It’s time to call home.

Maya’s thumb hovered over the glowing green accept button. Her mind raced back to the image of her father’s furious face framed by the open front door, his hand pointing relentlessly toward the street. Every hurtful word he had hurled at her echoed in her ears, yet an overwhelming knot of dread twisted in her stomach.

"I'm not calling him," Maya muttered, tossing the phone onto the empty seat beside her.

Victor didn't turn around, but she could see the reflection of his cold, calculating eyes in the rearview mirror.

"You think pride is going to save you, kid?" Victor’s voice was devoid of warmth. "If you don't warn him within the next three minutes, the federal agents already tracking Julian’s IP address will kick your front door down. And unlike your father, federal marshals don't care about family arguments. They will arrest him on the spot for money laundering."

Maya grabbed the phone. Her hands shook so badly she nearly dropped it between the seats. She punched in her father’s personal cell number, the one she had memorized since she was seven years old.

It rang twice before a gruff, exhausted voice answered on the other end.

"If this is another prank, Julian, I swear to God I'm calling the police myself," Mark barked into the receiver, his breathing heavy and ragged.

"Dad," Maya whispered, the single word slipping past her lips before she could stop it.

There was a sudden, dead silence on the line. The background noise of the suburban house—the faint hum of the refrigerator, the ticking hallway clock—vanished, replaced by the sound of Mark swallowing hard.

"Maya?" Her father’s voice lost all its previous fury, replaced by a sudden, hollow fragility. "Where are you? Elena said you went to the bus station. Listen, honey, I... I need you to come back. Something is wrong with the office server. Julian and Elena aren't answering their phones."

Maya felt a bitter laugh rise in her throat. "They aren't answering because they used you, Dad. Look at the manila folder Elena gave you before I left. Look at the signature on page four."

A rustling sound came through the speaker, followed by the heavy thud of paper hitting a wooden table.

"What are you talking about?" Mark demanded, though panic was rapidly bleeding into his tone. "This is... these are bank transfers. Millions of dollars. Moving through our company accounts to an offshore trust in the Caymans. This is impossible. Julian said these were standard venture capital infusions!"

"Julian lied," Maya said, her voice steadying as the harsh reality settled over her. "And so did Elena. They needed a fall guy with admin rights. They chose me, and you helped them hand me over."

Before Mark could reply, a loud, violent pounding echoed through the phone’s speaker, followed by the sound of splintering wood and shouting voices.
