Chapter 6 - Beneath the Tarmac

The air inside the concrete utility tunnel was thick with the scent of stagnant rainwater, rust, and damp earth. Maya clicked on a heavy-duty flashlight Victor had handed her before they slipped past the rusted chain-link fence behind the airfield. The beam cut through the absolute darkness, illuminating dripping pipes and scuttling shadows that darted away from the light.

"Stay close behind me," Victor whispered over the low, rhythmic roar of commercial jet engines rumbling overhead. "If airport security patrols catch us down here, they won't ask questions before drawing their weapons."

Maya nodded silently, clutching her canvas backpack tightly against her chest. Inside it, the heavy brass key felt like an anchor weighing her down. Every footstep echoed hollowly against the curved concrete walls, reminding her of how far she had fallen since that bright morning sunlight streamed into her suburban hallway. Only twelve hours ago, she had been a normal teenager worrying about midterms and chores. Now, she was crawling through a subterranean sewer beneath an international airport, hunting the very people who had destroyed her family.

"How did you get mixed up with Julian anyway?" Maya asked softly, her voice carrying an eerie resonance in the confined space.

Victor didn't stop moving, his boots splashing steadily through the shallow water pooling on the floor. "Julian used to work for my crew before he decided he was too smart for street-level operations. He learned how to manipulate corporate systems, but he lacked the patience to build an empire from scratch. He thought he could steal from my partners and pin it on some suburban teenager without consequences."

"And you let him?"

"I never let anyone steal from me," Victor replied coldly, pausing briefly at a vertical iron ladder that led upward toward a heavy steel manhole cover. "Julian thought he was the master chess player. He didn't realize he was just a pawn I let move across the board until he exposed his own king."

Victor reached up, gripping the rungs of the ladder. He pushed against the underside of the manhole cover with his shoulder. It groaned slightly, yielding an inch to reveal the faint, amber glow of sodium-vapor lights filtering down from the private tarmac above.

"This is it," Victor whispered, motioning for Maya to climb up first. "Hangar Four is fifty yards across the open tarmac. Their Gulfstream is idling right now. Move fast, stay low behind the fuel trucks, and don't make a sound."

May you like

Maya took a deep, shaky breath, banished the terror paralyzing her limbs, and grabbed the iron rungs. She pulled herself upward into the biting night air, emerging into the sprawling concrete expanse of the airfield just as a massive private jet began its deafening engine spool-up.
