Chapter 10 - The Aftermath of the Storm

The fluorescent lights of the federal field office hummed monotonously, casting a sterile white glow over the metal interrogation table. Maya sat in a sturdy plastic chair, sipping a styrofoam cup of lukewarm water. Across the table, a tired-looking federal prosecutor named Agent Vance flipped through the physical transfer ledgers and the micro-SD card Maya had pulled from the hangar lockbox.
For nearly two hours, Maya had answered every question with absolute precision, detailing every lie Elena had whispered, every fraudulent document Julian had slipped into her father’s office, and how Victor had pulled the strings from the shadows.
Agent Vance finally closed the heavy manila folder, looking up at Maya with a mixture of professional respect and lingering disbelief.
"You realize what you've handed us, don't you, Ms. Sterling?" Vance asked quietly. "This isn't just about a local frame-up. This ledger exposes a multi-state cyber extortion and money laundering ring that we've been trying to infiltrate for three years. Julian and Elena are facing minimum sentences of twenty-five years without parole."
"And my father?" Maya asked, her voice dropping to an anxious whisper.
Vance offered a reassuring nod. "Your father was thoroughly vetted through the server logs. He was an unwitting dupe—a corporate asset they manipulated using forged board resolutions and fake debt notices. He’s been cleared of all federal charges."
The heavy steel door of the interview room swung open, and Mark stepped inside. He looked older, his face etched with deep lines of exhaustion and profound remorse, but as his eyes met Maya’s, his expression melted entirely.
Without a word, Mark walked across the room and dropped heavily into the chair beside her, pulling her into a tight, trembling embrace.
"They released me," Mark whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "They told me everything you did. How you saved the firm. How you saved me."
"We're not out of the woods yet, Dad," Maya murmured softly, pulling back just enough to look him in the eye. "Victor is still out there. The feds didn't catch him at the airfield; he disappeared into the drainage tunnels before the backup units arrived."
Mark’s face tightened with sudden tension. "Who was that man, Maya? Why was he helping you?"
Before Maya could answer, the door to the interrogation room opened again, and Agent Vance stepped back inside, holding a sealed manila envelope bearing no return address.
"Ms. Sterling," Vance said, his expression grave. "Front desk just handed this over. It was left by a courier who vanished before security could intercept him. It's addressed to you."

Maya’s heart skipped a beat. With trembling fingers, she took the envelope, tore open the flap, and pulled out a single sheet of heavy bond paper. Scrawled across it in neat, deliberate handwriting was a short message: The game isn't over yet, kid. Keep your doors locked.
