Chapter 14 - The Breach

The house plunged into absolute, suffocating silence. Downstairs, the faint creak of floorboards signaled that someone had stepped through the kitchen window and was now standing in the darkened hallway.
Maya grabbed her father’s arm, signaling him to stay completely still. She motioned toward the heavy oak dresser blocking the corner of the bedroom.
Mark nodded silently, his face pale with adrenaline as he helped her push the heavy piece of furniture against the bedroom door, creating a makeshift barricade just as a heavy, deliberate footstep began climbing the stairs.
Creak. Creak. Creak.
The footsteps were slow, measured, and terrifyingly calm. Whoever was walking up those stairs wasn't rushing; they were hunting.
Maya slipped her hand into her canvas backpack, her fingers wrapping around the heavy metal base of the stapler she had used on Julian. It was a pathetic weapon against a professional assassin, but it was all she had.
A heavy hand tried the bedroom doorknob. It turned smoothly, but the door only swung an inch before slamming hard against the interior barricade of the dresser.
A low, muffled curse echoed from the hallway. Then, a massive shoulder slammed violently against the wooden panels of the door. The wood splintered loudly, but the deadbolt and the dresser held firm under the initial impact.
"Dad, take my backpack and go out the second-story bathroom window onto the garage roof," Maya whispered fiercely, her eyes locked on the splintering wood of the door. "Run to the neighbor's house and call Vance."
"I'm not leaving you here alone," Mark hissed back, grabbing a heavy brass table lamp from the nightstand as a makeshift club.
"If we both stay, we both die!" Maya shouted in a fierce whisper. "Go!"
Before Mark could argue further, a second, devastating shoulder slam shattered the upper hinge of the bedroom door, tearing it half off its frame. A tall figure dressed entirely in black tactical gear stepped through the breach, holding a suppressed pistol with professional precision.
Maya didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy glass water pitcher from the bedside table and hurled it directly at the intruder’s head with all her remaining strength.

The intruder dodged the flying glass, but the distraction gave Maya just enough time to shove her father toward the adjoining bathroom door, slamming it shut behind him just as the gunman raised his weapon and fired. A deafening crack echoed through the bedroom as a bullet splintered the doorframe inches from Maya’s head.
