Chapter 7 - A Desperate Call

The silence on the line stretched for a long, agonizing moment before Claire finally spoke, her voice like cracking ice.

"What documents, Thomas?"

There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end. Thomas paused, clearly thrown off by the icy calm in his sister's tone. "What? Claire, why are you talking to me like that? Look, Julian just called me ten minutes ago. He’s completely unhinged. He said if I don't help him access the offshore reserves tonight, he’s going to hand over a folder to federal prosecutors implicating us—both of us—in the trust fund rerouting."

Claire narrowed her eyes, staring at the glowing monitor where David had just pulled up the exact transaction logs linking Thomas to the shell companies.

"Us, Thomas?" Claire asked softly. "Why would Julian have documents implicating you in the trust fund rerouting? Unless, of course, you had something to do with it."

A heavy, suffocating silence fell over the phone line. The ambient hum of the server racks seemed to amplify in the background. Thomas stuttered, his panic suddenly sounding much less rehearsed and much more genuine.

"What are you talking about? Claire, don't listen to him, he's lying! Julian is trying to deflect blame because you froze his assets at the gala tonight. Everyone in the city is talking about it!"

"The gala was three hours ago, Thomas," Claire said, her voice dropping an octave. "And the forensic audit results were locked in this server room not twenty minutes ago. Yet you already know that Julian is threatening to expose a trust fund rerouting scheme that hasn't even been made public yet."

"I... I heard it from a mutual acquaintance," Thomas stammered desperately. "A broker at the club mentioned that Julian was screaming about the family trust—"

"Stop lying," Claire interrupted, her patience finally snapping. "I am standing in the server room right now, looking at the digital signatures. I see your IP address, Thomas. I see your biometric authentication keys attached to the shell company wire transfers. You didn't just hear about the scheme. You engineered half of it with him."

On the other end of the line, Thomas’s breathing turned ragged. The pretense was gone, stripped away by the undeniable weight of the digital evidence.

"Claire... please," Thomas whispered, his voice cracking. "Julian trapped me. He said if I didn't help him move the capital, he would expose my gambling debts to the board and ruin my career. I didn't have a choice!"

"You always had a choice," Claire said, her voice steady as iron. "And now you'll explain it to the federal agents waiting downstairs."

Before Thomas could reply, the server room door clicked open behind her, and two men in dark suits stepped inside.
