Chapter 11 - The Trap Closes

Julian stumbled backward, tripping over a discarded pallet strap and nearly falling into the open maw of the shipping container. The two hired men stopped loading crates, looking nervously at the federal agents whose service weapons were now drawn and pointed directly at the ground in front of them.
"Federal agents! Nobody move!" Agent Vance’s voice echoed off the corrugated steel walls of the surrounding containers, cutting through the damp night air with authoritative finality.
Julian’s chest heaved as he stared at Claire, who stopped ten feet away from him, her expression completely devoid of pity. The corporate titan who had stood so proudly at the gala just hours ago was now reduced to a desperate, cornered fugitive standing in a muddy industrial yard.
"Claire," Julian choked out, holding up a hand as if to ward off a physical blow. "You don't understand. I had to do this. The creditors... they were going to ruin me. If you just let us load this last truck, I can settle the debts and we can fix—"
"There is nothing to fix, Julian," Claire interrupted, her voice cutting through his frantic excuses like a scalpel. "The accounts are frozen, your shell companies are exposed, and your smuggling operation has just been documented by federal oversight."
"You ruined everything!" Julian suddenly snapped, his mask of fear slipping away to reveal a flash of raw, desperate fury. He took a sudden, lunging step toward her, his face twisted in rage. "I built this empire! You were just a compliance clerk hiding behind my coattails!"
Before Julian could take another step, Agent Vance closed the distance with terrifying speed, slamming Julian face-first against the side of the steel container and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists with a sharp click.
"Hands behind your back, Julian Vance. You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and international smuggling," Agent Vance recited smoothly, reading the charges into the damp night air.
Julian thrashed weakly against the restraint, his dark blue suit jacket tearing slightly at the shoulder as he was forced down onto the concrete. He glared past the agent’s shoulder at Claire, his eyes burning with malice.
"You think you've won, Claire?" Julian laughed hysterically, spittle flying from his lips. "Check your phone. Look at what your precious brother Thomas sent to your email five minutes ago before the feds grabbed his phone!"

Claire frowned, pulling her smartphone from her pocket with a cold feeling in her stomach. She unlocked the screen and opened an automated alert notification from her personal inbox.
