Chapter 10 - Midnight at Sector Four

The unmarked federal sedan tore through the deserted warehouse district near the Port of Long Beach, its tires hissing against the damp asphalt. In the backseat, Claire sat upright, her beige dress slightly wrinkled from the frantic car ride, her black clutch resting firmly on her lap. Agent Vance rode in the front passenger seat, barking encrypted orders into his radio, while Marcus Vance drove with a fierce, white-knuckled grip on the steering wheel.

"They're burning the evidence," Marcus growled, his eyes fixed on the distant amber crane lights of the container yards. "If those microprocessors get unloaded and distributed into the local tech market before federal custody is established, Julian walks away clean, and our company takes the fall for smuggling."

"He won't walk away," Claire said coldly, staring out the rain-streaked window at the towering industrial stacks. "He's desperate. Freezing his assets cut off his liquidity, and without those illegal shipments to pay off his overseas creditors, his life is effectively over."

The sedan swung hard around a rusted chain-link perimeter fence, its headlights sweeping across the vast expanse of stacked shipping containers that stretched toward the dark ocean horizon. Ahead of them, parked haphazardly beside Sector Four, was a sleek black luxury SUV with its hazard lights flashing rhythmically.

"Hold here," Agent Vance commanded, drawing his service weapon as Marcus slammed on the brakes. The car slid to a halt fifty yards away from the target container.

The rear doors of the massive steel shipping container stood wide open, casting a harsh, artificial white glow across the wet pavement. Inside, two men in dark hoodies were frantically transferring heavy wooden crates into the back of a waiting pickup truck. Standing right beside them, directing the operation in a rumpled dark blue suit with his tie pulled loose, was Julian.

"Faster! Move those crates before the morning shift arrives!" Julian shouted over the roar of a idling forklift, his face slick with sweat and panic.

Claire pushed her door open and stepped out into the cool maritime air, her heels clicking steadily against the concrete as she walked toward the light. Marcus Vance and Agent Vance flanked her on either side, their presence commanding and absolute.

Julian turned around as he heard the footsteps approaching, his frantic expression freezing instantly into a mask of pure terror as he saw his estranged wife stepping out of the shadows like an avenging angel.
