Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Ballroom

The silence that followed Claire’s declaration was heavier than any physical weight. Around the ballroom, wealthy executives and prominent investors froze, their champagne glasses suspended halfway to their mouths, sensing a catastrophe of epic proportions. Elena lowered her hand, the brilliant diamond suddenly feeling less like a symbol of triumph and more like a shackle. She turned her stunned gaze from Claire to Julian, demanding an immediate explanation.

"Julian, what is she talking about?" Elena’s voice was sharp, laced with sudden, sharp panic. "Who is this woman, and why is she talking about freezing our assets? Tell me this is a sick joke."

"It's not a joke, Elena," Julian whispered, his fingers still outstretched toward Claire as if he could physically pull back the devastation she had just unleashed. He turned to his wife, his tone frantic and pleading. "Claire, listen to me. We built this together. You can't just pull the plug like this. Think of what it will do to the firm, to our lives."

Claire didn't flinch. She adjusted the strap of her black clutch and took a deliberate step closer. "We built nothing, Julian. You built a house of cards on stolen foundations, and I was simply the one holding up the middle card. Now, I'm stepping away."

"You have no legal right to do that without a court order!" Julian shouted, forgetting for a split second where they were. Heads turned sharply in their direction. Whispers began to ripple through the crowd like wind through dry grass.

"Check your email, Julian," Claire replied smoothly, her phone glowing softly in her palm. "The restraining orders and the forensic audit filings were sent to your primary server three minutes ago. Every board member has already received a copy of the embezzlement logs."

Elena gasped, clutching her red dress at the collarbone. "Embezzlement? Julian, have you been stealing from the firm?"

"He hasn't just been stealing from the firm, Ms. Vance," Claire said, turning her cool gaze to Elena for the first time. "He's been using your family's shipping capital to cover his gambling debts and offshore liabilities. That engagement ring on your finger? It was bought using a fraudulent liquidity loan against my personal trust."

Elena recoiled as if she had been physically struck, ripping the ring off her finger and slamming it onto the table beside the clipboard.
