Chapter 5 - The Midnight Server Room

The downtown financial district was mostly quiet at midnight, save for the hum of the climate control systems inside the corporate headquarters tower. Claire swiped her security badge at the tenth-floor turnstile, the LED light flashing a clean, authorizing green. Her heels clicked rhythmically against the polished concrete floor as she made her way toward the server room. The adrenaline from the gala had faded, replaced by the cold, calculated focus of a woman dismantling an empire piece by piece.

She pushed open the heavy glass door of the server room, where rows of black server racks blinked with thousands of tiny green and amber indicator lights. Waiting for her beside the primary terminal was David, her lead IT security consultant and long-time confidant.

"You made quite a scene tonight, Claire," David said without looking up from his dual-monitor setup. "It’s trending on the financial news networks already. The hashtag #DiamondScam is number one in the city."

"Good," Claire replied, setting her black clutch on the metal desk and pulling out a small encrypted flash drive. "Public exposure makes it much harder for Julian's corporate allies to quietly sweep his embezzlement under the rug behind closed doors."

"Well, about that," David paused, his fingers stopping over the mechanical keyboard. He turned his chair to face her, his expression unusually grim. "We decrypted the secondary partition on Julian’s personal drive about twenty minutes ago. The one he thought was completely isolated from the main corporate network."

Claire raised an eyebrow, stepping closer to the screen. "And? Did we find more offshore accounts?"

"We found accounts, yes," David said quietly. "But not corporate ones. They belong to a network of shell companies registered overseas under a completely different corporate identity. And the primary beneficiary isn't Julian."

"If not Julian, then who?" Claire asked, feeling a sudden chill settle in her stomach.

"Your brother, Thomas," David said, pointing to a name displayed clearly in red text on the monitor. "He’s been quietly moving capital out of your family trust for the last three years, using Julian’s embezzlement scheme as a convenient smokescreen."

Claire stared at the screen in stunned silence, the blood draining from her face as the entire foundation of her revenge campaign tilted violently beneath her feet.
