Chapter 12 - The Final Blackmail

The screen glowed brightly in the dim light of the shipping yard. Claire tapped on the unread message sent from Thomas’s personal email address just three minutes prior. Attached was a single digital file labeled Insurance_Policy.pdf, accompanied by a short, chilling text note: If I'm going down, you're coming with me, sis. Open the attachment.

Claire’s thumb hovered over the glass screen. She didn't open it immediately. She knew Thomas well enough to recognize the desperate cornered animal tactic, but the mention of their shared family history gave the threat a dangerous weight.

"What is it, Ms. Miller?" Agent Vance asked, keeping one hand firmly on Julian's shoulder while holding his radio with the other. "Does your brother have another leverage play?"

"He thinks he does," Claire replied steadily, her voice barely a whisper above the idling engine of the pickup truck. She looked down at Julian, who was grinning spitefully from the ground, his face smeared with a streak of industrial grease.

"Open it, Claire," Julian taunted, his voice dripping with venom. "Your little brother isn't just a thief. He kept a very detailed record of how you helped cover up our very first illegal liquidity transfer three years ago to save the firm from bankruptcy. You're an accomplice, Claire. We go down together."

Marcus Vance stepped forward, peering over Claire's shoulder at the glowing screen. "Don't let him rattle you, Claire. Whatever is in that file, it's a desperate bluff from a sinking ship."

"It's not a bluff," Claire said quietly, her expression darkening as she finally tapped the PDF attachment and scrolled past the first page of scanned legal signatures.

The document on her screen wasn't just a fabricated accusation. It was a signed, notarized confession from three years ago—one that Claire herself had drafted and signed under intense psychological pressure from Julian when they first realized their company was failing. In order to secure emergency venture capital back then, she had knowingly bypassed federal securities disclosure laws, trusting Julian’s promise that they would amend the filings the following quarter.

She had buried her own past mistake to protect the business, and now Thomas had dug it up and weaponized it against her.

"Well?" Julian laughed, the sound echoing harshly off the metal containers. "Are you going to show the federal agent your own confession, or should I read it out loud for them?"

May you like

Claire slowly lowered her phone, her breath catching in her throat as she realized the terrible trap she had walked into.
