Chapter 7 - The Interrogation Room Confession

The fluorescent lights of interrogation room three buzzed with a low, agonizing hum that seemed to vibrate directly inside Claire’s skull. She sat at the scarred metal table wearing her green knit top, her brown ponytail completely unraveled now, hanging in damp tendrils around her pale face. Across from her sat Officer Ramirez, a stern-faced detective with a digital audio recorder sitting squarely in the middle of the table, its small red light blinking rhythmically in time with Claire’s racing heartbeat.
“Let’s go over this one more time, Mrs. Hayes,” Ramirez said, tapping a manicured fingernail against a signed confession document. “You state that your husband, Mark Hayes, orchestrated the embezzlement of fifty thousand dollars from the firm’s payroll account to fund a private real estate purchase in the Bahamas, using your personal bank credentials as a proxy.”
Claire shook her head frantically, tears finally spilling over her lower eyelids and tracking through the gray dust smudged on her cheek.
“I didn't sign that willingly!” Claire sobbed, her voice cracking with raw, unfiltered terror. “Elena... Elena told me that if I didn't sign the paperwork admitting to the debt, Mark would lose his professional license and go to prison for ten years! She said it was the only way to protect our family!”
Ramirez didn't blink. She slid the document an inch closer across the metal surface.
“Mrs. Hayes, coercion is a serious legal defense, but it requires contemporaneous evidence,” Ramirez said smoothly, her voice devoid of empathy. “Right now, the digital signature on this confession matches your biometric profile, and your thumbprint is stamped in digital ink. Furthermore, security footage from the hallway outside this precinct shows your sister Elena handing you this exact portfolio five minutes before you entered this room.”
Claire froze. She stared at the detective, her breath catching in her throat as the horrifying puzzle pieces slammed together in her mind. Elena wasn't outside in the waiting area. Elena had been brought into the building as a witness, but she had been given free roam of the administrative corridors under the guise of providing family counseling documents.
“She... she tricked me,” Claire whispered, her voice dropping to a terrified gasp. “She told me it was a medical waiver for my OB-GYN... she told me signing it would let the ambulance take me to the hospital immediately instead of holding me for questioning.”
The heavy steel door of the interrogation room clicked and slowly swung open. Detective Vance stepped inside, holding a printed transcript of Mark’s phone call from the living room. He tossed the paper onto the table next to the signed confession.
“It’s a bit late for excuses, Mrs. Hayes,” Vance said coldly, leaning over the table so his face was inches from Claire’s. “Your husband is currently being detained at his firm on federal wire fraud charges. And according to the property registry we just pulled, the Bahamas real estate deed isn't registered in Mark’s name, nor yours.”
Claire looked up, her eyes wide and bloodshot. “Whose... whose name is on the deed?”
May you like
Vance smiled thinly. “Elena Vance. Your sister legally acquired the property using your husband’s corporate funds twenty minutes ago, and she just filed an emergency restraining order against both of you.”
