Chapter 6 - The Downtown Raid

The flashing red and blue lights of three unmarked police cruisers illuminated the frosted glass windows of Hayes & Associates Architectural Firm on the fourteenth floor of downtown’s premier corporate tower. Inside the sleek, minimalist office, two uniformed officers were systematically emptying the contents of Mark’s mahogany filing cabinets onto the leather consulting chairs. Financial ledgers, architectural blueprints, and tax documents fluttered down like autumn leaves.

Detective Vance stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, overlooking the bustling city traffic below, while holding a secure department-issued tablet. He tapped the screen, bringing up a live feed of the interrogation room back at the precinct where Claire was currently being processed, despite her medical complaints.

Mark stood in the center of his office, his grey jacket unzipped, his breathing shallow and rapid. He watched in helpless fury as an officer tossed a thick manila folder labeled Confidential: Trust Restructuring onto the floor.

“You have no right to be in here without a federal warrant,” Mark said, though his voice lacked conviction. He knew that if Elena had successfully manipulated the local precinct’s digital database, a judge’s signature would have been obtained in minutes under the guise of an emergency asset-flight risk.

Vance didn’t turn around immediately. He scrolled through a document on his tablet, his thumb sliding rhythmically across the glass.

“Mr. Hayes, when a suspect’s corporate accounts are tied to an anonymous offshore shell corporation that funded a massive real estate purchase in the Bahamas this morning, standard warrants become a mere formality,” Vance said calmly, finally turning to face him. “Especially when the purchase agreement was signed using your electronic IP address and authenticated via your corporate VPN.”

Mark shook his head violently. “I was home all morning! I was working on the Miller project design files right here on my desktop! Check the version history of those CAD files—they timestamp every single keystroke!”

Vance walked over to Mark’s custom walnut desk and tapped the sleek monitor resting on top of it. The screen was black, powered down completely. When Vance pressed the physical power button, the machine hummed to life, flashing a bright blue recovery screen.

“We did check the version history, Mr. Hayes,” Vance said quietly. “And according to the local drive logs, your computer’s operating system was put into deep-sleep mode at exactly 8:14 AM today. It wasn't woken up again until you logged in to call the ambulance.”

Mark stared at the monitor in utter disbelief. That was impossible. He had been reviewing design iterations with his lead project manager via Zoom until 11:30 AM. He remembered the call vividly. He had argued with Sarah, his project manager, about the load-bearing calculations for the waterfront pavilion.

“Call Sarah,” Mark demanded, his voice rising in panic. “Call Sarah Miller right now. She was on a video conference call with me all morning! She can verify I was sitting right here!”

Vance sighed, pulling out his phone and tapping a quick contact shortcut. He held the phone up on speakerphone, letting it ring three times before a professional, clipped voicemail greeting picked up.

“You’ve reached Sarah Miller. I am currently out of the office attending an emergency architectural site inspection in Seattle and will not return until Thursday,” the automated voice recording stated clearly.

Mark felt a cold sweat break out across his forehead. Seattle? Sarah was supposed to be in Chicago for the regional convention, not Seattle. And she certainly wasn't on a Zoom call with him this morning.

Vance clicked the phone off and slipped it back into his pocket, his eyes narrowing as he stepped closer to Mark.

“Sarah Miller flew to Seattle yesterday afternoon, Mr. Hayes. Her boarding pass and TSA security footage confirm it,” Vance said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “Which means you’ve been lying to the police for the last twenty minutes. And right now, down in interrogation room three, your pregnant wife just signed a full confession implicating you as the mastermind behind the entire financial embezzlement scheme.”
