Chapter 2 - Shadows at the Front Door

The digital chime of the front door echoed through the tense living room like a gunshot. Mark kept his phone pressed to his ear, his eyes locked on Elena, who didn't even flinch as the heavy wooden door swung open to reveal Detective Vance. The veteran investigator stood on the threshold wearing a rumpled trench coat, holding a small silver flash drive in his palm—the exact drive that contained the exterior security footage of the house. Elena’s confident smirk faltered for microsecond before settling back into a mask of innocent concern.

“We got a call about a domestic disturbance at this address,” Vance said, his gravelly voice cutting through the thick atmosphere. He stepped inside, his sharp eyes immediately taking in the tableau: Claire still curled on the carpet in her green knit top, clutching her abdomen; Mark kneeling protectively over her with his phone out; and Elena standing by the bookcase with her arms crossed.

“She pushed her,” Mark said, his voice rising in desperation as he motioned toward Elena. “She shoved my pregnant wife to the floor. I want her arrested right now. The dispatcher is still on the line.”

Vance held up a calloused hand, signaling for silence. He looked at Elena, whose posture shifted instantly from arrogant defiance to fragile distress. With a masterclass in manipulation, Elena let out a soft, shuddering breath, her eyes welling with convincing tears that didn't quite spill over.

“Detective, thank God you’re here,” Elena said, her voice trembling in a pitch-perfect imitation of a victim. “Mark is completely delusional. Claire fell while we were simply discussing our mother’s estate. Mark has been unstable for months, and he’s trying to frame me to cover up his own explosive temper.”

Mark stared at his sister-in-law in sheer disbelief, his mouth opening to protest, but the dispatcher’s voice crackled from his smartphone speaker, demanding an update. Claire groaned softly from the floor, her face pale as a sheet.

“I saw her,” Mark stammered, pointing a finger at Elena. “I saw her shove her with both hands! Check the cameras! The smart-home system records everything twenty-four-seven!”

Vance turned his gaze slowly toward Mark, his expression unreadable. He raised the silver flash drive slightly.

“That’s the funny thing about smart-home systems, Mr. Hayes,” Vance said slowly, stepping further into the room. “Someone wiped the main server clean exactly thirty seconds before my patrol car pulled into your driveway.”
