Chapter 11 - The Ultrasound and the Ultimatum

The heavy metal tray struck Mark across the cheek with a sickening thud, sending him stumbling backward into a stack of empty storage crates. The plastic bins collapsed under his weight, spilling rolls of sterile gauze and discarded medical wrappers across the dusty linoleum floor. Mark tasted copper in his mouth, a sharp sting blooming along his jawline, but he didn't hesitate. He pushed himself up onto one knee, glaring daggers at the man in the grey lab coat who now stood between him and Claire.

“Touch her again and I will kill you,” Mark snarled, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that vibrated through the small room.

The man in the lab coat—a tall, heavily built individual with cold, dead eyes and a surgical scar running down his left cheek—merely chuckled. He slipped his hands into the pockets of his coat without breaking a sweat, turning back toward the portable ultrasound machine.

“Relax, Mr. Hayes. No one is dying here tonight,” the man said smoothly, his voice carrying a crisp European accent. “We are simply concluding a very necessary medical consultation. Your wife’s blood pressure is dangerously high, and stress is the primary catalyst for pregnancy complications at this stage.”

Claire was hyperventilating, her chest rising and falling rapidly beneath her green knit top as she clutched her abdomen. She looked at Mark with tears streaming down her pale cheeks.

“Mark, make them stop,” she cried out, her voice breaking. “They... they injected something into my IV. They said it was a stabilizing vitamin, but my arm is burning.”

Mark’s blood ran cold. He looked past the fake doctor toward Elena, who was leaning casually against a counter filled with rusted medical instruments, her long dark hair falling neatly over her maroon turtleneck.

“Elena, what have you done?” Mark demanded, his voice trembling with a mixture of terror and white-hot fury. “She’s your sister! How can you do this to your own flesh and blood for money?”

Elena let out a soft, mocking sigh. She walked slowly toward the examination chair, reaching out to stroke a strand of damp hair away from Claire’s forehead with a gesture so sickeningly affectionate it made Mark’s stomach turn.

“Money? Mark, you still don’t understand, do you?” Elena said, her voice dropping to a harsh, confidential whisper. “This isn’t about the forty thousand dollars. It isn’t about the house, or the firm, or even the trust fund.”

Elena leaned down, her lips brushing against Claire’s ear as Claire flinched away in revulsion.

“This is about retribution,” Elena whispered, her eyes locking onto Mark’s with a feral intensity. “Twenty years ago, our father left his entire estate to Claire because she was the golden child—the academic prodigy, the dutiful daughter. I was cast out, labeled the unstable one, forced to claw my way up from nothing while you two lived in suburban luxury.”

Elena stood up straight, smoothing down her cashmere blazer with effortless grace. She gestured toward the portable ultrasound machine, where a faint, rhythmic heartbeat pulsed across the grainy monochrome screen.

“The baby she’s carrying,” Elena continued casually, “isn’t just an heir to the Hayes fortune. It’s the final legal key required to unlock the offshore trust corpus. And under the terms of our father’s amended will—which I legally filed this afternoon using a certified medical proxy—if Claire is declared mentally incompetent due to acute postpartum trauma, sole guardianship of the child reverts to the closest surviving adult relative.”

Mark stared at her, horrified realization dawning on him like a physical blow.

“You planned this from the very beginning,” Mark whispered. “The argument, the push, the police report... you engineered the entire domestic disturbance so you could institutionalize her and steal the baby.”

Elena smiled, a cold, triumphant curve of her lips.

“Bingo, Mark,” she said, turning to the man in the lab coat. “Administer the second dose. Let’s get this signed before the local patrol units finish their shift change.”
