Chapter 12 - The Second Dose

The syringe in the fake doctor’s hand caught the harsh blue light of the ultrasound monitor, the clear liquid inside gleaming with terrifying promise. Mark pushed himself up from the wreckage of the storage crates, ignoring the throbbing pain in his jaw and the sharp ache in his ribs. He knew he couldn't overpower the burly man in hand-to-hand combat, but he didn't need to win a fight—he just needed to create enough chaos to shatter their carefully timed schedule.
“Don’t you dare touch her!” Mark yelled, lunging forward with a sudden burst of adrenaline, grabbing a heavy metal IV pole standing near the door and hurling it across the room.
The pole crashed loudly against the aluminum supply cabinet, sending a cascade of surgical instruments clattering onto the floor in a deafening clatter of steel. The man in the lab coat cursed sharply, turning away from Claire for a split second to block the incoming debris.
That microsecond of distraction was all Claire needed. With a desperate surge of adrenaline born of sheer maternal terror, she ripped the IV tape from the back of her hand, ignoring the sudden spray of crimson droplets that spattered against her green knit top, and scrambled off the reclining medical chair.
“Claire, run!” Mark shouted, diving across the room to tackle the fake doctor around the knees just as the man reached back toward the patient chair.
Mark and the burly attacker crashed hard onto the dusty linoleum floor, the wind knocked out of both men in a violent wheeze. The syringe slipped from the fake doctor’s grip, skittering across the smooth tiles and shattering harmlessly against the baseboard.
Claire stumbled toward the exit, her brown boots slipping on the debris-strewn floor, her breath coming in ragged, painful gasps. She reached the heavy metal fire door, threw her weight against it, and burst out into the dark, damp corridor of the abandoned clinic.
Elena didn't panic. She didn't scream, nor did she chase after her sister. Instead, she stood calmly by the counter, pulled a sleek, high-end satellite phone from her blazer pocket, and pressed a single speed-dial button.
“Detective Vance? Yes, it’s Elena,” she spoke into the phone, her voice carrying an eerie, melodic calm that chilled the air. “The subjects are attempting to flee the St. Jude facility. You have my full authorization to execute the apprehension protocol under the emergency mental health act. Use whatever force is necessary.”
Mark, struggling to pin the burly attacker beneath him while absorbing heavy elbow strikes to his ribs, looked up in horror as Elena calmly snapped her phone shut.
“You’re insane, Elena,” Mark choked out, tasting blood in his mouth. “The police won’t cover this up forever. Vance is dirty, but he’s not an assassin.”
Elena walked over slowly, standing directly above Mark and the struggling doctor. She looked down at Mark with an expression of absolute, clinical detachment.
“Vance isn't an assassin, Mark. He’s just a pragmatist,” Elena said softly. “And as for the police... well, you haven’t checked your email today, have you?”
Mark froze. The fake doctor seized the momentary distraction to drive a heavy forearm into Mark’s chest, sending him rolling backward across the floor, gasping for air.
Elena turned on her heel and walked toward the exit, her voice trailing back over her shoulder like a ghost in the dark.
