Chapter 5 - The Heirloom in the Closet

The plastic evidence bag caught the harsh living room light, casting a shimmering, distorted reflection across Detective Vance’s stony face. Mark stared at the diamond-encrusted heirloom necklace, his mind struggling to bridge the gap between reality and the bizarre labyrinth of accusations closing in around him. That necklace had been locked inside the bank vault downtown. The only people with keys to that vault were Claire and... Elena.
“That’s impossible,” Mark said, his voice hard as steel. “The vault requires dual-key authorization and a biometric scan from both sisters. Claire hasn’t been to the bank in six months.”
Elena let out a delicate, exasperated sigh, rolling her eyes toward the ceiling as if dealing with an exceptionally slow child.
“Mark, please stop embarrassing yourself,” Elena said, stepping away from the doorway and walking toward the kitchen island. She picked up a glass of water, her movements agonizingly calm and controlled. “Claire has been talking about liquidating mother’s estate for months to fund her extravagant lifestyle. She went to the vault last Tuesday while you were at your downtown architectural firm meetings. I tried to stop her, and that’s why we’ve been arguing today.”
Claire let out a sharp cry from the stretcher, ignoring the paramedics who were trying to strap her down.
“You lying psychopath!” Claire screamed, struggling against the restraint straps with surprising strength for someone who had just claimed severe injury. “You stole the key from my purse at the Thanksgiving dinner! You told me you lost yours!”
The lead paramedic placed a calming hand on Claire’s shoulder. “Ma’am, please keep your heart rate down. Your vitals are spiking, and that’s dangerous for the pregnancy.”
Detective Vance watched the exchange like a hawk studying a pair of field mice. He slowly slipped the evidence bag back into his coat pocket and pulled out his official department notebook, flipping it open to a fresh page. He clicked a silver pen, the metallic sound cutting sharply through the quiet room.
“Mr. Hayes,” Vance said, addressing Mark directly while keeping his eyes on Claire. “Whether the necklace was taken last week or six months ago, the fact remains that it was recovered from a master suite closet registered exclusively to you and your wife. Furthermore, our financial crimes unit flagged a suspicious wire transfer leaving your joint business account yesterday afternoon, moving fifty thousand dollars into an offshore shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands.”
Mark felt the floor literally drop out from under him. Fifty thousand dollars? His firm’s payroll account was entirely separate from their personal finances. If funds had been drained from that account, his business partners would be financially ruined by Monday morning, and the liability would fall squarely on his shoulders as the managing partner.
“That’s our corporate payroll,” Mark whispered, horror dawning on him. “Someone used my digital signature.”
Elena turned around from the kitchen island, holding her glass of water. A subtle, victorious smile tugged at the corner of her lips as she looked directly into Mark’s eyes.

“Well, Mark,” Elena said softly, taking a slow sip of water. “Looks like you’re going to need a really good lawyer. Because the police are already searching your office downtown right now.”
