Chapter 10 - The Abandoned Clinic

The biting autumn wind whipped down the deserted industrial alleyway, carrying the metallic scent of rain and decaying concrete. Mark’s worn-out leather shoes crunched against broken glass as he sprinted toward the address his public defender had hastily scribbled on the back of a business card: a dilapidated, decommissioned medical clinic on the outskirts of the port district. The rusted iron sign above the double doors hung crookedly, reading St. Jude’s Community Health Center, though the facility had been shuttered by the city health department over five years ago.

Mark slammed his shoulder against the peeling green double doors. They gave way with a loud, protesting screech, plunging him into pitch-black darkness. He pulled his smartphone from his pocket, hitting the power button, but the battery icon flashed red before immediately dying—the hours in the holding cell had completely drained what little charge remained.

“Claire!” Mark shouted into the cavernous, echoing hallway, his voice bouncing off water-stained ceiling tiles and peeling linoleum floors. “Claire, can you hear me?!”

No answer came back, save for the rhythmic, ominous dripping of a leaky pipe somewhere deep within the bowels of the abandoned building.

Mark felt his way along the cold cinderblock wall, his fingers brushing against rough paint and exposed electrical wires. He rounded a corner into what appeared to have been the main reception area. A shattered glass partition littered the floor, crunching under his heavy boots. Faint slivers of moonlight filtered through the grime-caked windows overhead, casting eerie, elongated shadows across a row of overturned plastic chairs.

Then, he heard it—a muffled, desperate sob coming from behind a heavy metal fire door at the end of the corridor.

Mark rushed forward, throwing his weight against the door handle. It was unlocked. He stumbled into a small, sterile examination room illuminated only by the harsh blue glow of a portable medical ultrasound machine plugged into a heavy-duty generator in the corner.

In the center of the room, Claire sat slumped in a reclining medical chair, her green knit top stained with fresh tears, her brown ponytail completely undone. Standing over her with a cold, clinical detachment was a man in a rumpled grey lab coat holding a digital tablet. And standing by the doorway, casually tossing a set of silver car keys in her palm, was Elena.

“Well, look who decided to show up,” Elena said smoothly, her voice echoing off the tiled walls with terrifying calm. “Took you long enough, Mark. We were starting to think you got lost in the precinct bureaucracy.”

Claire lifted her head, her eyes wide with absolute terror. She reached out a trembling hand toward her husband.

“Mark... get out of here,” Claire gasped, her voice raspy and weak. “They aren't doctors... they’re trying to force me to sign away my parental rights.”

Mark lunged forward, rage overriding all logic, but before he could take two steps, the man in the lab coat stepped into his path, casually pulling a heavy steel medical tray scanner and swinging it directly toward Mark’s jaw with chilling professional precision.
