Chapter 8: The Unexpected Ally

Before Richard could take another step toward her, the sharp screech of tires echoed down the rocky access road outside the boathouse. Headlights slashed across the cracked windows, blinding everyone inside with a blinding wall of white light.
Richard swore loudly, spinning around to face the entrance as a heavy-duty black SUV plowed directly through the rotting wooden fence, smashing it into splinters and coming to a screeching halt just feet from the doorway.
The driver's side door flew open, and Marcus Vance leaped out, gripping a heavy iron crowbar in one hand and a professional satellite transmitter in the other.
"Step away from my niece, Richard!" Marcus roared, his voice cutting through the roar of the surf with absolute fury.
Vivian shrieked, stumbling backward as Marcus advanced with terrifying determination. Richard’s face twisted into an ugly scowl, his composure finally shattering completely.
"You're making a massive mistake, Marcus," Richard warned, keeping his hands carefully visible while gesturing subtly toward the shadows where his security guards had been waiting.
"The only mistake was trusting a corporate parasite with my family's legacy," Marcus snapped. He didn't hesitate; he hurled the satellite transmitter directly at the floor between Richard and Vivian. It instantly deployed a secondary independent mesh network, bouncing the encrypted live stream past the corporate telecom filters and back onto the public internet with a loud chime.
Chloe’s phone suddenly buzzed violently in her hand. The screen lit up again—not with an error message, but with a live comment feed scrolling at lightspeed, showing hundreds of thousands of concurrent viewers tuning in from across the globe.
"Look at that, Richard," Chloe said, stepping out from the shadows with the leather journal held high. "Your corporate firewalls can't stop a decentralized satellite relay."
Richard’s face drained of all color. He realized in that instant that the game was truly up. The digital evidence was out in the open, immutable and permanent.
"Get in the car, Vivian," Richard hissed, his eyes darting toward the SUV as he backed away toward the exit.

"You're not going anywhere," Marcus said, blocking the doorway with the crowbar resting casually across his shoulder. "The state police are three minutes out. And I have the toxicology report from the independent lab right here in my pocket."
Vivian let out a choked sob, sinking to her knees in the dirt as the distant wail of police sirens began to echo down the winding coastal highway.
