Chapter 12: The Reckoning

The chaotic scramble of federal agents securing the boardroom was swift and absolute. Handcuffs clicked in rapid succession as Beatrice, Arthur, and the remaining board members were marched out one by one under the blinding flash of media cameras waiting in the hallway.
Chloe stood by the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the city lights stretch out endlessly across the San Francisco bay. The grey sweater felt light now, no longer a symbol of exile, but a reminder of who she was and where she came from.
Marcus walked up beside her, holding two steaming paper cups of coffee he had grabbed from the breakroom cart. He handed one to her, offering a warm, reassuring smile.
"You did the right thing, Chloe," Marcus said softly. "Your mother would have been damn proud of you tonight."
Chloe took the cup, letting the warmth seep into her freezing fingers. "It’s not over yet, Uncle Marcus. Richard is still talking to his defense attorneys, and the corporate restructuring process is going to take months."
"Let him talk," Marcus replied, taking a sip of his coffee. "The federal prosecutors have airtight evidence of financial fraud and premeditated poisoning. He’ll never see the outside of a maximum-security prison again."
As if summoned by their conversation, the lead federal investigator walked over to them, holding a thick manila folder labeled Case File 404-Vance.
"Miss Vance, Mr. Vance," the agent nodded professionally. "We’ve just finished cataloging the contents of the hidden wall safe you directed us to recover from the estate."
Chloe turned immediately, her heart skipping a beat. "Did you find the missing patent documentation?"
The agent opened the folder, pulling out a crisp, heavy parchment document stamped with a federal seal and her mother’s original signature dated three days before her passing.
"We found the patent, yes," the agent said, a faint smile touching his lips. "But we also found a final certified holographic will that supersedes every single agreement Richard and Vivian forced your mother to sign."
Chloe’s breath caught in her throat. She reached out with trembling fingers and took the document from the agent's hand.
The text at the top read clearly: Last Will and Testament of Evelyn Vance.

"It leaves everything," Chloe whispered, her eyes scanning the lines of text in absolute disbelief, "every single asset, property, and share of Quantum Dynamics..."
"To you," Marcus finished for her, a tear glistening in the corner of his eye. "100 percent ownership, completely unencumbered by corporate debt or fraudulent contracts."
