Chapter 4: The Hidden Vault

The dull metallic click of the hidden wall safe popping open echoed loudly in the cavernous hallway. For a fraction of a second, all movement ceased. Richard froze mid-turn, his authoritative posture instantly collapsing into stark panic. Vivian’s face drained of color, her hands dropping rigidly to her sides as she stared at the dark rectangular opening exposed in the wainscoting beneath the glass staircase.
"Don't touch that," Richard barked, abandoning his calm demeanor as he lunged forward with terrifying speed.
But Chloe was already dropping to her knees. Adrenaline surged through her veins, overriding the exhaustion and grief that had weighed her down moments before. She shoved her hand into the dark cavity before the security guards could reach her, her fingers brushing against cold steel and crisp, heavy parchment.
"Get her away from there!" Vivian screamed, her voice cracking with genuine terror as she grabbed a heavy brass umbrella stand, ready to hurl it.
Chloe yanked her hand back, clutching a thick leather-bound journal and a sealed envelope bearing her mother’s distinct, elegant handwriting. Across the front, written in dark indigo ink, were the words: If anything happens to me, read this immediately.
"Stay back!" Chloe cried, scrambling backward across the polished hardwood until her back hit the front double doors. She clutched the journal to her chest like a shield. "You didn't just steal the house, did you? You stole the patent!"
Richard stopped two paces away, his chest heaving under his navy blue suit jacket. His face was flushed with anger, but his eyes darted nervously toward the security guards, silently signaling them to hold their position.
"You are holding stolen property, Chloe," Richard said, his voice dropping into a smooth, persuasive tone that sounded chillingly fake. "That safe contains corporate trade secrets belonging to the enterprise. Hand it over, and we can discuss a monthly stipend for your living expenses."
"A stipend?" Chloe laughed hysterically, tears streaming down her face. "You think you can buy me off with my own money? My mother founded Quantum Dynamics. Every single dollar you and Vivian are living on belongs to me!"
"Hand over the journal, Miss Vance," one of the security guards stepped forward, a hulking man with a cold, dead-eyed stare.
Chloe’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She looked down at the envelope in her hand and noticed a smudge of red ink on the seal—not ink, but wax. Her mother’s personal notary seal.
"Step one foot closer, and I'll open this right here and read every single word out loud to the corporate board members arriving for the emergency meeting at noon," Chloe threatened, though she had no idea when the board meeting was actually scheduled.

Richard’s eyes narrowed dangerously. He exchanged a fleeting, dark look with Vivian.
"Let her read it," Vivian whispered coldly, stepping up beside Richard with a sickeningly sweet smile. "Because by the time she finishes page one, she won't be alive to tell anyone."
