Chapter 5: The Midnight Broadcast

The heavy oak double doors slammed shut behind Chloe as she sprinted down the winding driveway into the freezing autumn night. The grey sweater offered zero protection against the biting wind whipping off the Pacific cliffs, but the adrenaline pulsing through her veins kept the cold at bay. Clutched tightly in her trembling hands were the leather journal and the sealed envelope—the only weapons she had left against Richard and Vivian.
Behind her, the distant crunch of heavy boots on gravel signaled that the security guards were in hot pursuit. She dove off the paved road, scrambling down a steep embankment overgrown with thick blackberry brambles that tore at her jeans and scratched her hands raw.
"Over there! Check the cliff path!" a gruff voice echoed through the trees from above.
Chloe held her breath, pressing her back against the damp earth of a retaining wall as the beam of a high-powered flashlight swept across the canopy just inches above her head. Her lungs burned for oxygen, but she forced herself to stay entirely silent, waiting for the footsteps to fade down the opposite trail.
Minutes felt like hours before the forest grew quiet again, save for the rhythmic crashing of the ocean waves far below. Shivering uncontrollably, Chloe pulled out her smartphone. The screen flickered to life, casting an eerie blue glow over her tear-streaked face. Her battery was at twelve percent.
She opened her contacts list, scrolling past coworkers and acquaintances until she tapped on the name of Marcus Vance—her mother’s estranged younger brother and a senior investigative journalist for the San Francisco Chronicle.
The phone rang three times before a gruff, sleep-roughened voice answered. "Chloe? Do you know what time it is?"
"Uncle Marcus, you have to help me," Chloe whispered fiercely, tears spilling over again as the fear finally caught up with her. "Mom didn't die of a heart attack. Richard and Vivian poisoned her."
Silence hung heavily over the line for three agonizing seconds. When Marcus spoke, all sleepiness was gone from his voice. "Explain yourself right now. Where are you?"
"I’m hiding near the estate. I found Mom’s private journal in a hidden safe. She wrote down everything—the corporate embezzlement, the fake medical waivers, and... and a threat Richard made against her life two weeks ago."
"Listen to me very carefully, Chloe," Marcus commanded, his tone sharp and urgent. "Do not go to the police. The local precinct is entirely in Richard’s pocket. Get to the old boathouse at Blackwood Cove. I’m uploading a secure, encrypted broadcasting app to your phone right now. Stream the journal contents live to the public channel I'm sending you. It's the only way to stay alive."

Chloe stared at her phone as a data file downloaded onto her screen. Before she could click open the application, a bright beam of light suddenly blinded her from the top of the embankment.
"Found her!" a voice shouted from the darkness just twenty feet away.
