Chapter 1: The Threshold of Exile

The heavy silk of the black button-down shirt rustled sharply as Vivian tightened her grip on Chloe's arm. The cool air of the expansive modern hallway bit into the exposed skin of the twenty-year-old girl, who stumbled on the polished hardwood floors.
"Your mother is gone now this is my house, let go of me!" Chloe choked out, her voice cracking under a wave of hot, suffocating grief. Her red hair fell across her pale face in wild tangles, damp with tears that had not stopped since the hospital monitors flat-lined three hours ago.
Vivian did not loosen her fingers. Her forty-year-old face remained carved in ice, utterly devoid of empathy, her dark eyes fixed entirely on the massive wooden double doors ten feet ahead.
"Get out! You don't belong here anymore!" Vivian spat, pushing the younger woman toward the threshold with a cold, deliberate shove that sent Chloe slamming against the doorframe.
Chloe pressed her palms against the splintering wood, staring back in sheer horror and disbelief as her breath hitched in her throat.
"This was my mother’s home!" she cried, weeping intensely, her entire body shaking from the betrayal.
The echoing click of leather shoes on glass abruptly cut through the argument. A heavy, measured step resonated from above, drawing both women's attention toward the grand glass staircase. Richard, a forty-five-year-old man in a tailored navy blue suit, descended slowly. His dark beard was neatly trimmed, and his expression carried the heavy, authoritative weight of a master who expected absolute obedience.
"Thomas, what are you doing to my daughter?" Richard’s voice boomed through the high ceilings, cutting through the silence like a scalpel.
Chloe whipped her head around, her tear-stained eyes locking onto the man she had called her stepfather for over a decade. The tension in the hallway grew suffocating as the heavy glass and steel architecture seemed to close in around them.

"She was leaving—or you were throwing her out? Tell me exactly what happened while I was gone," Chloe demanded, stepping away from the door and confronting Vivian directly while Richard reached the bottom of the stairs.
Vivian smirked, crossing her arms over her chest. "Ask your precious father. He signed the eviction papers yesterday."
