Chapter 3: The Ghost in the Study

The manila envelope sat on the glass console table like a ticking bomb. Chloe stared at the heavy brown paper, her breath catching in her throat as the horrifying reality of the betrayal settled deep into her bones. Richard stood rigidly beside Vivian, neither of them making a move to touch the documents, as if the paperwork spoke for itself.
"You lied to the doctors," Chloe said, her voice shaking violently as she stepped closer to Richard. "You kept me at the suburban branch office all week on fake inventory audits so I wouldn't be at the main estate when she passed. You planned this."
"Watch your accusations," Richard warned, stepping forward, his imposing height casting a long shadow over Chloe's slight frame. "Your mother signed those papers of her own free will. Her mental faculties were intact, despite the medication."
"She was heavily sedated!" Chloe yelled, the sound bouncing off the high concrete ceilings of the hallway. "She couldn't even lift a pen during my last visit on Tuesday. How could she sign away her life's work?"
Vivian let out a sharp, mocking laugh that grated on Chloe’s raw nerves. "People do desperate things when they realize their only child cares more about backpacking across Europe than running a multi-million-dollar tech firm. Your mother knew you weren't cut out for this."
"Shut up!" Chloe snapped, turning on Vivian with a glare so fierce it momentarily wiped the smirk off the older woman's face. "You were just her personal assistant six months ago. Now you own the house? What kind of hold did you two have over her?"
Richard’s expression hardened further, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "That is enough, Chloe. You have ten minutes to gather your personal belongings from the guest house before security escorts you off the premises permanently."
"This is my home!" Chloe shouted, tears spilling over her eyelashes once again. "My mother built this company from a garage in Silicon Valley before you even knew her name, Richard! You were just a hired legal consultant she married out of pity!"

"And now I am the sole executor of her estate," Richard replied coldly, his voice devoid of any human warmth. He turned his back on her, signaling to a pair of burly security guards emerging from the shadows near the indoor pool.
Chloe backed away toward the front door, her mind racing. She had no money, no car, and no legal standing. But as the guards stepped forward to grab her arms, her foot caught on the edge of the hallway rug, and her heel struck a loose floorboard near the base of the glass staircase, popping it open to reveal a hidden wall safe she had never known existed.
