Chapter 11: The Ultimatum

The confession hung in the air of the boardroom like a heavy shroud. For several long seconds, no one dared to breathe. The digital stream on the wall monitor continued to loop silently, a relentless reminder that the outside world was watching every move they made.
"So," Chloe said, breaking the silence with chilling calm. "You didn't just let Richard take the house. You helped him silence her."
Arthur lowered his head, staring at his polished Italian leather shoes. "We didn't know he was going to kill her, Chloe. We swear to God, we only thought he was going to force her to sign the voluntary resignation papers while she was recovering from the stroke."
"There is no difference between a poisoned cup and a forced signature," Marcus stated coldly, leaning against the back of an empty chair. "You are all accessories to murder and corporate treason."
Beatrice stood up so abruptly her chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor. "Listen to me, both of you," she hissed, her voice trembling with desperate fury. "If you hand these files over to the federal authorities, Quantum Dynamics will instantly collapse into bankruptcy. Thousands of employees will lose their jobs, your mother’s legacy will be dragged through the mud, and you won't inherit a single cent of clean equity."
"Is that a threat, Beatrice?" Chloe asked, not blinking an inch as she met the older woman's venomous glare.
"It's a reality," Beatrice spat back, leaning over the table. "You can destroy us, but you will destroy yourself in the process. Or... we can rewrite the corporate charter right now. You take over as majority CEO, we quietly step down due to 'health reasons,' and the scandal never sees the light of day."
The room fell dead silent once more as all eyes turned to Chloe. The temptation was staggering. With a single nod, she could walk away a billionaire, completely vindicated, with absolute control over her mother’s empire.
Marcus watched his niece closely, saying nothing, leaving the ultimate decision entirely in her hands.
Chloe looked down at her hands, still bearing the faint scratches from the blackberry brambles outside the estate. She thought of her mother lying in the sterile hospital bed, robbed of her voice and her life by the very people sitting around this table.
"You think this is about money?" Chloe whispered, a bitter smile touching the corners of her lips. She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out her smartphone.
"What are you doing?" Arthur asked, terror gripping his voice again.

"I'm not cutting a deal with murderers," Chloe said clearly. She pressed a single button on her screen, connecting directly to the federal grand jury hotline her uncle had set up downstairs. "Officer, this is Chloe Vance. I am calling from the Quantum Dynamics boardroom on the forty-second floor. We have twelve suspects ready for immediate federal detention."
Before Beatrice could lunge across the table to grab the phone, the heavy boardroom doors flew open, and a squad of armed federal agents flooded the room.
