Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Foyer

The suffocating darkness of the kitchen was punctuated only by the heavy, ragged breathing of the four occupants trapped inside. Clara pressed her back against the cool stainless steel of the dishwasher, her fingers clutching the lapels of Viktor’s suit jacket for dear life. A few yards away, Arthur’s body hit the floor with a muffled thud, sliding out of sight into the shadows of the pantry corridor. Whoever had breached the estate wasn't here to negotiate or steal quiet glances—they were here to clean house.

"Stay behind the island," Viktor commanded in a lethal whisper, his body tense and coiled like a spring ready to release. He raised his suppressed pistol, aiming directly at the swinging kitchen door where the faint silhouette of a man in tactical gear had just appeared.

"Vance," a raspy voice called out from the hallway, distorted slightly by a low-frequency communicator. "You're running out of real estate. Hand over the girl and the ledger, and the board might let you walk out of here breathing."

Viktor didn't lower his weapon. A cold, humorless smirk touched the corner of his mouth despite the grave danger. "Tell the board that if they want my ledger, they can come into my kitchen and take it themselves. But bring body bags, because the last men who tried left in pieces."

Without warning, a flashbang grenade came rolling through the swinging door, spinning across the tile floor toward Viktor’s feet.

"Down!" Viktor roared, lunging backward and shoving Clara down behind the heavy oak kitchen island just as the device detonated with a blinding flash of white-hot light and a deafening concussion that rattled the cookware off the shelves.

Clara squeezed her eyes shut, screaming as the high-pitched ringing pierced her eardrums. The acrid smell of sulfur and burning magnesium filled the air. Through the haze of smoke, heavy combat boots stepped decisively across the threshold. Two armed intruders moved into the kitchen, their rifles sweeping the room with thermal scopes that cut straight through the darkness.

Viktor rolled out from behind the counter, firing two silent shots with clinical precision. The first intruder dropped instantly, a clean entry wound through his tactical helmet. The second intruder raised his rifle, but before he could pull the trigger, a fragile glass jar of pickled peppers flew through the air, shattering against his visor and blinding him just long enough for Viktor to close the distance and strike him across the temple with the heavy butt of his gun.

The second man collapsed like a felled tree, unconscious. The kitchen fell deathly quiet once more, save for the crackle of a radio communicator on the dead man's chest.

"Alpha team has gone dark," a metallic voice crackled from the radio unit on the floor. "Initiate protocol zero. Burn the estate down."

Clara opened her eyes, coughing through the smoke as she looked up at Viktor, whose knuckles were bleeding and whose white dress shirt was smeared with soot and dark stains.

"Protocol zero?" Clara gasped, her voice trembling uncontrollably. "What does that mean?"

Viktor looked down at his phone, which had just received an emergency ping from the perimeter fence. His expression turned to stone. "It means they've remotely unlocked the underground gas mains. We have less than three minutes before this entire house goes up in flames."
