Chapter 11 - The Investigator's Office

The heavy oak door of Federal Investigator Hayes’ office creaked open, letting in the cool, sterile scent of government-issue carpet and old paper files. Clara sat on the edge of a stiff leather chair, still draped in Viktor’s soot-stained black suit jacket, her hands wrapped tightly around a styrofoam cup of lukewarm coffee that had long since gone cold. Across the room, Viktor stood near the window, his wounded shoulder now treated and professionally bandaged beneath a fresh white dress shirt, staring out into the rain-slicked downtown streets.

Investigator Hayes, a middle-aged man with tired eyes and a rumpled grey suit, dropped the encrypted thumb drive onto his desk with a heavy clatter. He looked up, his gaze shifting back and forth between the hardened underground boss and the bruised, exhausted young maid.

"You realize what you've handed me, Vance?" Hayes asked, his voice low and tense. "This isn't just a tax fraud case. This is a multi-million-dollar conspiracy involving three sitting senators, the city police commissioner, and every major transit contract awarded in the last five years. Sterling didn't just build an empire; he bought the entire local government."

"And now you have the proof to dismantle it," Viktor replied evenly, his voice devoid of emotion. "Every transaction, every shell company, every bribe receipt. It’s all on that drive."

Hayes rubbed his temples, letting out a long, weary sigh. "Proof is useless if it doesn't hold up in court. And right now, Sterling's legal team has already filed an emergency injunction claiming you kidnapped Clara and broke into his corporate headquarters to plant fabricated evidence."

Clara stood up so fast her chair scraped loudly against the linoleum floor. "That is a complete lie!" she shouted, her voice trembling with indignation. "Sterling murdered my father two years ago because my father threatened to expose their embezzlement scheme! And tonight, Sterling tried to burn us alive in the estate to silence me permanently!"

Hayes held up a placating hand, his expression softening slightly as he looked at the dark bruises still visible around her eyes. "Calm down, Clara. I believe you. But believing you and proving it to a federal judge are two entirely different battles. Sterling’s lawyers are already claiming Clara acted as a willing accomplice in corporate espionage."

Viktor stepped away from the window, closing the distance between himself and the desk in two long strides. He placed both hands flat on the polished wood, leaning down until his dark eyes locked onto the investigator's face with terrifying intensity.

"You want an airtight case, Hayes?" Viktor asked softly, a dangerous edge to his tone. "I'll give you Sterling himself. Tonight, at midnight, Sterling is meeting his primary international buyer at the shipping docks to liquidate his remaining assets and flee the country."

Hayes stared at him in disbelief. "Are you out of your mind? If you walk onto those docks without an official tactical backup unit, Sterling's private army will execute you on sight."

May you like

"Then bring your backup unit," Viktor said, straightening up and adjusting his cuffs. "Because we leave in one hour."
