Chapter 14 - The Shot in the Dark

The world seemed to slow down to a crawl. Arthur’s finger tightened around the trigger of his revolver, his eyes wide with desperate madness. Clara froze, her breath catching in her throat as the black barrel pointed straight at her heart.

Before Arthur could pull the trigger, a sharp, muffled crack pierced the damp night air.

Viktor’s pistol fired with clinical precision. The bullet struck Arthur squarely in the wrist, shattering bone and sending his revolver clattering harmlessly against the concrete platform with a metallic ring. Arthur shrieked in agony, clutching his bloody hand to his chest and collapsing to his knees in defeat.

Federal agents swarmed forward in a synchronized wave, tackling Sterling to the ground before he could reach the cargo ramp, while others rushed up the metal staircases to disarm the snipers on the catwalks. The sprawling dockyard fell silent, save for the rhythmic flashing of police lights and the steady patter of the rain.

Hayes walked up to the scene, looking down at Sterling as federal cuffs were locked tightly around the corporate criminal's wrists. He then turned his gaze toward Viktor, who slowly lowered his smoking pistol and holstered it beneath his suit jacket.

"It's over, Viktor," Hayes said, offering a respectful nod. "Sterling and his entire network are in federal custody. The board members are already turning on each other to secure plea deals."

Viktor didn't smile. He turned his attention entirely to Clara, who was shaking slightly as the residual adrenaline of the night finally began to fade from her system. He stepped close, checking her over with gentle, searching eyes to ensure she hadn't sustained any new injuries during the chaos.

"Are you alright?" Viktor asked softly, his voice stripped of all its usual menace and authority.

Clara let out a shaky breath, a genuine, tired smile finally breaking through her exhaustion. She reached out, her fingers gently touching the lapel of the suit jacket she was still wearing—the jacket that had kept her safe through fire, darkness, and terror.

"I'm more than alright," Clara whispered, her eyes shining with unshed tears of relief. "I'm finally free."

Sterling was dragged past them in handcuffs, spitting curses under his breath as federal agents shoved him into the back of a transport van. As the doors slammed shut, Arthur was led away in another unit, leaving the dockyard quiet and peaceful once more.

Viktor offered Clara his arm, a gesture of quiet respect and an unspoken promise of a new beginning. She took it without hesitation, turning her back on the shadows of the past as they walked together toward the waiting federal vehicles, unaware that a single loose thread remained unpulled in the shadows back at the estate.
