Chapter 10 - The Alleyway Ambush

The blinding glare of twin halogen headlights pierced the darkness of the underground reservoir, forcing Clara to throw her arms up to shield her eyes. The heavy roar of idling diesel engines vibrated through the concrete floor, drowning out the sound of the dripping water. Two black armored SUVs had blocked the alleyway directly above the exit manhole, their doors swinging open simultaneously to reveal a half-dozen heavily armed men wearing private security uniforms bearing Sterling’s corporate insignia.

"Don't move!" a harsh voice bellowed through a megaphone from the top of the ladder. "Vance, drop the weapon and step into the light with your hands behind your head. The girl stays right where she is."

Viktor didn't drop his gun. Instead, he stepped in front of Clara, positioning his body directly between her and the armed men at the top of the ladder. His breathing was heavy, the makeshift bandage on his shoulder slowly soaking through with fresh, dark blood, but his stance remained as rigid and unshakable as a steel beam.

"They're Sterling's private security detail," Clara whispered, her voice shaking as she clutched the lapels of Viktor’s suit jacket tighter. "They aren't police, Viktor. If they take us, we won't make it to a jail cell."

"I know," Viktor replied, his voice dangerously calm. He reached into his inner suit pocket with his left hand, pulling out a small, encrypted thumb drive—the very one Clara had discovered hidden behind the server panel in the master study. "This drive contains every wire transfer, offshore account, and blackmail file Sterling used to build his corporate empire over the last decade. It’s his death warrant."

"And if they kill us here, they get the drive back," Clara pointed out, her eyes darting frantically around the reservoir chamber for an alternative exit.

"They won't get it," Viktor said quietly. He turned his head slightly, looking down at her with a look of absolute, terrifying clarity. "Clara, listen to me very carefully. If I go down in the next two minutes, you take this drive, climb into the drainage pipe behind the support column, and run straight to federal district investigator Hayes. He's the only man on the inside who hasn't been bought off."

"I'm not leaving you here to die," Clara snapped back, her voice laced with sudden, fierce defiance that caught Viktor off guard. "We walked into this together, and we walk out together. Do you hear me?"

A dark, appreciative smile flickered across Viktor’s bearded face for a fraction of a second before his expression hardened back into cold steel.

"Then we don't go quietly," Viktor said.

Before the men on the ladder could issue another warning, Viktor fired a single, perfectly aimed shot straight into the overhead electrical transformer box mounted on the brick wall beside the manhole.

BOOM.

A massive shower of blue and white sparks exploded across the alleyway, plunging the upper street into total darkness and knocking out the SUVs' headlights instantly amidst screams of shock and confusion from the security detail.
