Chapter 12 - The Shipping Docks

The salty mist of the harbor hung heavy in the air, mixing with the dense fog rolling in off the dark ocean. Rows of towering shipping containers loomed like monolithic steel giants across the sprawling dockyard, casting long, menacing shadows beneath the flickering amber sodium lights. Clara huddled in the passenger seat of Viktor’s unmarked sedan as it crept silently along the perimeter road, its headlights turned off to avoid detection.
"We're too close," Clara whispered, her hands gripping the door handle as she looked out at Berth 4, where a massive cargo freighter sat idling against the pier. "If Sterling’s men spot your car, they'll open fire before we even get out."
Viktor parked the sedan behind a stack of rusted steel beams, cutting the engine completely. The silence inside the car was absolute, save for the rhythmic patter of light rain hitting the windshield. He reached across the console, his large, calloused hand gently covering hers to stop her nervous trembling.
"Hayes and his tactical team are moving into position on the north perimeter," Viktor said, his voice surprisingly gentle compared to the cold steel he usually carried. "Once we step out of this car, you stay directly behind me. Do not look back, do not try to be a hero. Your only job tonight is to survive long enough to watch Sterling lose everything he stole."
Clara looked up into his dark eyes, seeing no trace of fear—only an unbreakable determination to finish what they had started. She nodded slowly, taking a deep, grounding breath. "I'm not afraid of Sterling anymore, Viktor. Not with you here."
Viktor gave her hand a reassuring squeeze before withdrawing his own, drawing his suppressed pistol from his shoulder holster, and checking the magazine with a practiced, fluid motion. He pushed his door open, stepping out into the cold harbor mist, followed closely by Clara.
They moved with silent efficiency through the maze of shipping containers, navigating the shadows until they reached the edge of Berth 4. Below them, on the open concrete platform beside the freighter's loading ramp, stood Arthur and Sterling.
Sterling wore an immaculate charcoal overcoat, his silver hair neatly combed, looking every bit the respectable corporate philanthropist he pretended to be on television. Standing beside him was Arthur, holding a heavy metal briefcase that presumably contained the final bearer bonds required to finalize Sterling's escape.
"Everything is in place," Arthur was saying, his voice carrying clearly across the damp night air. "The federal investigators are still looking at Vance’s estate ruins. By sunrise, we'll be in international waters."
"You underestimate Vance, Arthur," Sterling replied smoothly, a cold smirk playing on his lips. "Men like Viktor don't just burn up in fires. They crawl out of the ashes looking for vengeance. Which is why you're going to make sure the cargo hold is secure before we board."
Viktor stepped out from behind the container stack, his voice cutting through the harbor wind like a razor blade.

"Don't bother checking the hold, Sterling," Viktor called out, raising his pistol and stepping into the harsh glare of the dock lights. "You're not going anywhere."
