Chapter 1 - The Weight of Bruises

The flicker of the fluorescent bulb above the industrial sink hummed a low, erratic note, casting pale shadows across Clara’s face. Water rushed over greasy porcelain plates, but her hands moved mechanically, barely registering the heat or the suds. A dark purple bruise pulsed beneath her left eye, mirroring the crescent-shaped contusion wrapped tightly around her forearm. She wiped a stray, warm tear from her cheek with the back of a trembling wrist, hoping against hope that the sprawling estate had finally fallen completely silent for the night.
"Boss, I thought everyone was asleep," Clara whispered, her voice cracking as the shadow of a tall, broad figure darkened the kitchen doorway.
Viktor stepped into the harsh light, his sharp dark eyes immediately locking onto her battered features. He wore his black suit jacket over a crisp white dress shirt, the fabric slightly wrinkled from a long night of dealing with the dangerous men who ran the upper echelons of the city's underground financial grid. A jagged scar cut through his dark beard, tightening as his jaw clenched. He paused by the swinging door, his expression hardening not with anger at her presence, but with a sudden, suffocating wave of concern.
"Why are you crying?" Viktor asked, stepping closer across the cold tile floor, his gaze sweeping over the raw marks on her skin.
Clara hugged her arms defensively across her chest, pulling the fabric of her maid uniform tighter as fresh tears pricked the corners of her eyes. "I'm fine," she insisted, her voice tight and defensive, though the tremble in her lower lip betrayed the lie entirely.
Viktor didn't accept the deflection. He shrugged off his heavy black suit jacket, stepping into her immediate space with deliberate slowness. Gently, he draped the warm garment over her shivering shoulders, the fabric carrying the faint scent of rain and expensive cedar. He looked deeply into her eyes, searching for the truth she was desperately trying to bury.
"Don't lie to me," Viktor said, his voice dropping an octave, rich with quiet fury. "Tell me who hurt you."
May you like
Clara looked away, unable to bear the intensity of his stare, but as she glanced toward the dark hallway, she saw a pair of polished leather shoes step silently out of sight.
