Chapter 4: The Archive of Forgotten Names**

Marcus ushered Camille into the back of an unassuming vintage delivery van. As the vehicle rattled along the winding mountain roads toward Lyon, Marcus handed her a thermos of hot cocoa and a warm wool blanket.

"Your father called me three hours ago," Marcus said, keeping his eyes on the rearview mirror. "Before his signal went dark near the border."

Camille gasped, dropping the mug slightly. "He's alive?"

"He bought you time," Marcus said gravely. "The people chasing you aren't bank robbers or cartels, Camille. They are the directors of the Vanguard Coalition—a private conglomerate that buys out public orphanages, clinics, and clean-water initiatives across Eastern Europe to convert them into industrial assets."

He reached behind the seat and pulled out a heavy cardboard dossier.

"Ten years ago, your mother uncovered their shell companies. She proved they were laundering billions through fake humanitarian trusts. When they realized she was going to expose them, they tried to silence her. Arthur hid her research, took you into hiding, and spent a decade slowly buying back their controlling shares using their own hidden accounts."

"The gold..." Camille realized, pieces falling into place.

"The gold was the collateral needed to trigger the whistle-blower clause in the Swiss Supreme Court," Marcus nodded. "Arthur couldn't carry it without drawing radar. He needed someone innocent, someone the automated biometric locks would recognize without triggering federal alerts."

"He used me," she whispered, a pang of betrayal tightening her throat.

"No," Marcus said softly, glancing back with genuine warmth. "He trusted you. Because in this entire greedy world, you are the only thing he knew could never be corrupted."
