Chapter 8 - The Mother's Trap

The damp, metallic scent of rust and old salt hung heavy in the cavernous warehouse. In the center of the concrete floor, illuminated by a single swinging overhead work light, Lily sat bound to a wooden chair, her mouth taped shut. She whimpered softly when she saw Ivy and Daniel step through the shattered doorway, her tear-filled eyes wide with fear.

Standing beside her were Eleanor and Arthur Vanderbilt. Eleanor held a black detonator box in her wrinkled hand, her face contorted into a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You're right on time, criminals," Eleanor sneered, her voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls. "Step one step closer, and I press the button. The whole pier goes up, taking your precious little bastard and your precious secrets with it."

Daniel halted instantly, holding out his arm to stop Ivy, who was already lunging forward. His eyes scanned the perimeter, calculating escape routes, load-bearing pillars, and the exact distance to the detonator.

"Mother, put the detonator down," Daniel said, his voice dangerously calm. "You've lost. Marcus escaped with forged documents that will be flagged by federal regulators within the hour. You're holding a dead hand."

"You think we care about money anymore?" Arthur shouted, stepping forward with a metal pipe in his hand. "You humiliated our family! You married a thief who destroyed the Vanderbilt name, and you brought shame to everything we built!"

"She didn't destroy anything," Ivy stepped past Daniel, her voice ringing out with an icy, fearless authority that shocked even Eleanor. "You and Marcus framed my father, stole Sterling Enterprises, and murdered my family's legacy. I have the audio files on my phone. The entire board knows what you did."

Eleanor’s face paled for a fraction of a second before her expression hardened into pure malice. "Prove it from inside a crater!"

Eleanor’s thumb hovered directly over the red button on the detonator. Ivy’s heart skipped a beat. She knew Eleanor was insane enough to do it. But out of the corner of her eye, Ivy spotted a heavy steel hook dangling from an overhead crane chain directly above Arthur’s head, secured by a rusted magnetic release switch on the control panel beside her.

With a sudden burst of movement, Ivy lunged sideways, slamming her hand down onto the magnetic release switch.

Clang!

The massive steel hook dropped violently from the ceiling, swinging across the room like a wrecking ball and smashing directly into Arthur, sending him crashing into a stack of wooden crates just as Eleanor shrieked in terror and pressed the red button.
