Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Heir

The tinted window of the black unmarked sedan rolled down smoothly, revealing a silver-haired man in a bespoke charcoal suit. His piercing blue eyes—the exact shade of Daniel's—scanned the burning ruins of the warehouse before fixing entirely on Ivy.

"Arthur and Eleanor were fools to think they could bury the Sterling legacy so easily," the man said, his voice smooth, cultured, and dripping with untouchable power.

Daniel instantly stepped in front of Ivy and Lily, his body going rigid as ice water flooded his veins. "Grandfather," Daniel muttered, the single word carrying decades of unresolved bitterness. "What are you doing here? You retired from the global board ten years ago."

Jonathan Vanderbilt, the patriarch who had silently ruled the family empire from the shadows for half a century, gave a faint, chilling smile.

"Retirement is a myth for men like us, Daniel. And letting my incompetent son and delusional daughter-in-law ruin the family name was an oversight I am here to correct."

Jonathan stepped out of the sedan, his posture immaculate despite his advanced age. He ignored Daniel entirely, walking directly up to Ivy, who stood her ground, her chin raised in fierce defiance.

"Ivy Sterling," Jonathan said, offering a slight, formal nod of respect. "Your father was a brilliant man. Ruthless, but brilliant. It was a tragedy when he was forced out."

"You knew about the frame-up," Ivy stated, her voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage. "You watched them steal everything from my family, and you said nothing."

"Business requires collateral, my dear," Jonathan replied smoothly, his eyes gleaming with calculating interest. "Just as Daniel's marriage to you was calculated to unite the two largest shipping conglomerates in the Northern Hemisphere. Did you really think he fell in love with you by accident at that charity gala three years ago?"

Ivy felt the air leave her lungs. She slowly turned her head to look at Daniel, whose face had gone pale, his eyes refusing to meet hers.

"Daniel?" Ivy whispered, the word breaking in her throat. "Tell me he's lying."

Daniel swallowed hard, taking a step toward her. "Ivy, let me explain. When I first met you, yes, it was an introduction arranged by the board to acquire Sterling assets, but—"

"You lied to me," Ivy interrupted, stepping back as if his touch burned her. "Every single word. The wedding, the protection, the promises... it was all just a corporate merger."

Before Daniel could answer, Jonathan raised a hand, gesturing to a team of armed federal agents stepping out of his sedan.

"Take Mr. Vanderbilt into custody," Jonathan ordered coldly. "And escort Mrs. Vanderbilt and her daughter to the main estate. It's time to restructure the family."
