Chapter 11 - The Golden Cage

The Vanderbilt family estate in Greenwich, Connecticut, was a fortress of limestone, wrought iron, and manicured hedges that stretched for miles along the coastline. But to Ivy, the grand master suite on the third floor felt no different than a prison cell.

She stood by the towering arched windows, watching the armed guards patrol the perimeter below. Lily was sleeping soundly in the adjoining room, exhausted by the trauma of the night, unaware that they were once again trapped in the heart of the empire that had tried to destroy them.

The heavy oak door unlocked with a soft click, and Jonathan Vanderbilt stepped inside, walking with the quiet, predatory grace of an apex predator. He didn't knock, and he didn't wait for an invitation.

"You look distressed, Ivy," Jonathan remarked, pouring himself a glass of aged scotch from the crystal decanter on the mahogany sideboard. "You should be celebrating. With Eleanor and Marcus behind bars, and Daniel temporarily detained by the federal oversight committee, you are now the primary beneficiary of the Sterling-Vanderbilt trust."

"I don't want your money, Jonathan," Ivy said without turning around, her voice steady and laced with venom. "I want out. Let me and Lily leave this place tonight."

Jonathan chuckled softly, taking a slow sip of his drink. "Leave? My dear, you hold fifty-one percent of the combined shipping routes. Without you, the global markets would panic by Monday morning opening bell. You are no longer just an outsider; you are the queen on the board."

"Daniel said he loved me," Ivy whispered, the hurt finally cutting through her protective armor. "Was that part of the corporate strategy too?"

"Daniel was supposed to use you, yes," Jonathan admitted coldly, setting his glass down with a sharp clink. "But my grandson has always been dangerously sentimental. He actually fell for you. That is why I had him detained. A CEO distracted by affection is a liability I cannot afford."

Ivy spun around, her eyes flashing with fury. "If you touch him, I swear to God, I will burn this entire empire to ash, starting with you."

Jonathan smiled, unimpressed by her threats. He pulled a heavy, gold-embossed dossier from his coat pocket and tossed it onto the coffee table.

"Your father didn't commit suicide the night Sterling Enterprises fell, Ivy. He left a final contingency file—one that proves my own hands are clean, but implicates someone much closer to you."

Ivy stared at the dossier, her heart hammering against her ribs as Jonathan walked toward the door.

"Read page forty-two," Jonathan said softly before stepping out and locking the heavy oak door behind him. "It turns out your father's greatest betrayal didn't come from the Vanderbilts. It came from the person who raised you."
