Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Penthouse

The heavy oak doors of the Vanderbilt downtown penthouse slammed shut, sealing out the chaotic noise of the city and the suffocating drama of the wedding reception. The sprawling, minimalist penthouse was bathed in the cool blue glow of the Manhattan skyline, casting long, dramatic shadows across the polished concrete floors. Lily had finally fallen asleep, exhausted from the tears and the terror, resting peacefully in the guest suite upstairs under the watchful eye of Mrs. Gable, the loyal head housekeeper.
Ivy stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, her wedding dress still on, looking out at the endless sea of twinkling lights. Her reflection in the glass looked like a ghost—fragile, trapped, and haunted by a past she thought she had successfully buried years ago.
"They're going to keep digging," Ivy whispered, not turning around as she heard the soft click of Daniel’s dress shoes approaching from behind.
Daniel wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest. His warmth was a grounding anchor in the rising storm, but even his strength couldn't soothe the dread pooling in her stomach.
"Let them dig," Daniel murmured against her ear, his voice a low, steady rumble. "They’ll only find what I want them to find. I spent the last three years sanitizing your history, Ivy. No one touches you."
"Arthur was right about one thing," Ivy said, her voice trembling slightly as she gripped his wrists. "My name. Sterling Enterprises... it wasn't just a company, Daniel. It was my father's life work. And the night he died, someone made sure I took the blame for everything."
Daniel turned her around so she was facing him. In the dim light of the penthouse, his eyes were pools of unwavering devotion.
"I know the truth, Ivy. You were twenty-one, grieving, and framed by your uncle and my own mother in a hostile corporate takeover. That’s why I married you—not just because I love you, but because I’m going to help you destroy them."
Before Ivy could answer, a sharp, rhythmic tapping echoed from the private elevator foyer. It wasn't the polite knock of a guest or the chime of the buzzer. It was a calculated, heavy code. Three short, two long.
Daniel’s body went completely rigid. He immediately stepped away from Ivy, his expression shifting from a loving husband to a hardened corporate predator.
"Stay here," Daniel ordered in a whisper, his hand sliding under the console table to retrieve a matte-black firearm from a hidden biometric safe.
Ivy held her breath as Daniel crept toward the private elevator doors, the glowing floor indicator slowly ticking upward from the secure underground parking garage. Floor 45. No one had access to this floor without a master biometric override—a override that only two people on earth possessed: Daniel, and his estranged older brother, Marcus, who had supposedly died in a private plane crash five years ago.

The elevator bell chimed softly. The heavy steel doors slid open to reveal an empty car, save for a single, pristine white rose resting on a silver tray, dripping with fresh, dark blood.
