Chapter 1 - The Shattered Veil

The grand ballroom of the Vanderbilt estate glittered with crystal chandeliers and cascading white floral centerpieces, a testament to exorbitant wealth and social perfection. Yet the heavy air bore down on Ivy like an iron press. She stood rigidly in her heavy white wedding dress, her jeweled tiara biting into her scalp as the biting words of Eleanor Vanderbilt echoed off the marble walls. Eleanor, draped in dark blue lace, pointed a manicured finger straight at Ivy’s chest, her face twisted in absolute disdain.
"You are not a daughter. Your mommy's regret," Eleanor hissed, her voice cutting through the murmurs of the elite crowd.
Beside Ivy, seven-year-old Lily sobbed quietly, burying her face into the layers of white tulle, her small shoulders shaking under a dark sparkly dress. Ivy pulled the child tighter against her shoulder, feeling the dampness of the little girl’s tears soak through the expensive fabric.
"Enough, Eleanor," Ivy said, her voice strained but steady, refusing to let the matriarch break her spirit in front of the high-society guests.
"Don't you dare use that tone with me," Eleanor snapped, stepping closer, her eyes flashing with malice. "You trapped my son with a cheap trick and a bastard child. You don't belong in this family."
"I said, enough," a voice thundered from behind them, carrying a chilling, authoritative weight that instantly silenced the surrounding whispers.
Daniel strode into the circle of light, his tall frame clad in a sharp black tuxedo with a crisp white rose boutonniere pinned to his lapel. His jaw was clenched, his dark eyes locked onto his mother with a terrifying intensity.
"What did you just say?" Daniel demanded, stepping between his mother and his new wife.
Eleanor and Arthur, her husband, spun around in shock and confusion, their aristocratic composure faltering for the first time all evening.
"Daniel, she misunderstood," Eleanor stammered, her hands trembling slightly as she tried to regain control of the narrative.
Daniel ignored her entirely, looking down at Lily, then up at the hundreds of stunned faces staring from the reception tables. He squared his shoulders, his voice echoing across the silent hall.
"Can I have everyone's attention? Ivy is my daughter, and we are leaving."
The hall erupted into gasps, but Daniel didn't wait for the shock to fade; he scooped Lily into his strong arms and grabbed Ivy's hand, leading them toward the grand exit while Eleanor screamed her son's name in utter disbelief.
"Daniel, you cannot walk out on your own wedding reception!" Eleanor shrieked, sprinting after them with desperate fury.
As they burst through the heavy mahogany doors into the cool night air, a black limousine idled by the curb, and Daniel turned to Ivy with a look that promised a war she never asked for.

"Get in," Daniel whispered urgently, his hand hovering over the door handle as a pair of flashing police cruisers suddenly blocked the driveway.
