Chapter 14 - The Sinking Ship

The heavy steel doors of the underground holding cell remained locked tight, the digital keypads flashing an unforgiving, error-red code. A low, grinding rumble began to vibrate through the concrete foundation, accompanied by the terrifying sound of rushing water echoing from the drainage pipes overhead.
"He's flooding the sub-level," Daniel groaned, pushing himself up from the metal table with unsteady legs. The drug Arthur had injected was still lingering in his system, making his movements sluggish, but his eyes burned with fierce resolve.
"We need to find the manual override," Ivy said, scanning the dark concrete walls with her flashlight beam. Water was already pooling around their ankles, icy and fast-moving.
"There isn't one from the inside," Daniel said, walking over to the reinforced observation window. He raised his fist and slammed it against the thick glass, cracking it slightly. "Jonathan built this bunker during the Cold War. It’s designed to seal permanently if breached."
"Then we break it," Ivy declared, grabbing the heavy iron garden spade she had carried down from the garden. She handed it to Daniel. "Together."
Daniel took the spade, his strength returning as the adrenaline of survival overrode the poison in his veins. He positioned the sharp edge into the hairline crack of the reinforced glass, bracing his boots against the concrete wall.
"On three," Daniel grunted. "One... two... three!"
They struck the glass with every ounce of strength they had left. With a deafening shatter, the thick glass imploded, and a torrent of seawater rushed into the interrogation room, sweeping them off their feet.
Struggling against the freezing current, Ivy and Daniel pulled themselves through the broken window frame into the secondary drainage tunnel, swimming upward toward the faint glimmer of moonlight above.
They burst through the surface into the cool night air inside the estate’s private boathouse. Lily was waiting by the exit, having followed the emergency instructions precisely, holding the security tablet she had grabbed from the guard post.
"Mommy! Daniel!" Lily cried, running over to them as they dragged themselves onto the wooden dock.
Daniel coughed, wrapping his arms around both of them. "You safe? Are you okay, sweetheart?"
"I'm okay," Lily nodded, handing the tablet to Daniel. "Look. The police and federal marshals are already at the main gates. I triggered the silent override using Grandfather's master code from the guard room."
Daniel looked down at the tablet in shock and pride. The screen displayed a live feed of federal agents storming the Vanderbilt mansion, placing Jonathan Vanderbilt and Arthur Sterling into handcuffs as the final pieces of their criminal empire crumbled into dust.
"It's over," Ivy whispered, resting her head against Daniel's chest as the distant sirens wailed into the night.
Daniel kissed her softly, looking out at the calm, starlit ocean. "No, Ivy. Our real life together is just beginning."

As the sun began to peek over the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold and amber, they walked hand in hand toward the waiting cruiser, ready to face the world as a true family.
