Chapter 5 - Blackout

The absolute darkness of the penthouse was broken only by the emergency backup grid casting a dim, pulsing amber glow across the study walls. The monitors flickered, the green command lines replaced by a single, blinking line of white text: TRAPPED.

"Daniel?" Ivy’s voice shook as she reached out in the dark, her fingers brushing against the rough fabric of his tuxedo sleeve. "What's happening? The security system—it's locked us out."

Daniel’s fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard, but the terminal screen remained unresponsive, locked behind a high-level military encryption loop.

"Someone bypassed the local firewall from the inside," Daniel muttered, his jaw set. "The physical overrides have been disabled."

Before he could finish his sentence, the heavy titanium bookshelf doors of the study began to grind mechanically, slowly swinging shut.

"Run," Daniel commanded, grabbing Ivy’s hand and pulling her toward the emergency stairwell concealed behind the drapery.

They burst through the heavy fire door just as the study sealed shut with a deafening thud. The stairwell was freezing, echoing with the sound of dripping water and distant, metallic clanking from the building’s industrial ventilation shafts. They hurried down the concrete steps toward the residential suites, praying Lily was still asleep and safe in the guest room.

When they reached the forty-fourth floor, the heavy oak door to the guest suite stood wide open.

"Lily!" Ivy screamed, breaking away from Daniel and rushing inside.

The room was empty. The bed was neatly made, but the window was shattered, shards of glass sparkling like diamonds under the amber emergency lights. A cold wind whipped through the room, carrying the faint sound of a helicopter hovering somewhere just above the roof.

Daniel sprinted to the shattered window, looking up into the dark, swirling clouds. A sleek, matte-black chopper was ascending rapidly into the night sky, its navigation lights turned off.

"They took her," Ivy collapsed to her knees, her hands cutting on the scattered glass as the tears finally broke free. "They took my baby to get to us."

Daniel knelt beside her, pulling her trembling body into his arms. His face was a mask of terrifying, icy calm—the kind of calm that precedes a catastrophic hurricane.

"They think they won," Daniel whispered, kissing the top of her head. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his secondary, offline satellite phone, dialing a single, ten-digit number that he hadn't used in five years.

"Vance? It's Vanderbilt. I need every operative from the black ops security detail deployed to coordinates zero-four-zero by the Hudson River within ten minutes."

He hung up, looking down at Ivy with eyes burning with a lethal promise.

"We're going to get our daughter back, Ivy. And then, I'm going to burn my family's empire to the ground."

As they stepped out onto the roof via the emergency hatch into the howling wind, a solitary figure blocked their path, holding a glowing tablet displaying a live video feed of a terrified Lily tied to a chair in an abandoned warehouse.
