Chapter 7 - The Deluge

A torrential blast of freezing water erupted from the ceiling sprinkler, instantly soaking the pristine marble floor and turning the glittering shards of champagne glass into a swirling, hazardous rapid. The sudden deluge crashed down on Marcus, blinding him momentarily as water poured over his tactical gear and blurred his vision.

“Damn it!” Marcus roared, wiping his face with a wet forearm while his grip on the suppressed pistol slipped in the slick downpour.

Maya didn’t hesitate. Using the chaos of the freezing water and zero visibility, she dropped low and scrambled across the slick floor, sliding past Marcus’s legs like a desperate athlete stealing a base. Her service top was soaked through, clinging to her skin, but the bitter cold fueled her survival instincts. She hit the service corridor door with her shoulder, throwing her weight against the crash bar.

The heavy metal door groaned and swung open, spilling her out into the dimly lit, labyrinthine back hallways of the Zenith Hotel.

Behind her, Marcus’s muffled shout echoed down the concrete corridor. “Catch her! She can’t get to the elevators!”

Maya sprinted down the narrow hallway, her low-heeled shoes slipping on the linoleum. Her lungs burned with every breath, and the heavy thud of Marcus’s boots echoed behind her, growing closer by the second. She needed to reach Julian’s private penthouse suite on the top floor—the only place with a direct link to the corporate mainframe and the physical vault he had mentioned. But the public elevators were locked down, leaving only the service freight elevator at the end of the hall.

She rounded a sharp corner, slamming directly into a laundry cart overflowing with white hotel linens. The impact sent a cascade of heavy sheets spilling across the floor, creating a makeshift barrier. Maya didn’t stop; she vaulted over the cart, hearing Marcus trip heavily behind her with a furious curse.

Reaching the freight elevator, she hammered her palm against the call button. The mechanical doors remained shut, a small digital display flashing a glaring red SYSTEM LOCKED warning.

“Come on, open!” Maya whispered fiercely, tears mixing with the cold sprinkler water streaming down her face.

Heavy footsteps rounded the corner just ten feet away. Marcus emerged from the shadows, his pistol raised, water dripping from his tactical vest. He raised the barrel, aiming directly at her chest with cold, calculated precision. “End of the road, Maya. Give me the drive.”

Before Marcus could pull the trigger, the freight elevator bell chimed softly. The heavy steel doors slid open with a smooth hiss, revealing a dark, empty car.

Without thinking, Maya threw herself backward into the elevator, her hand blindly hitting the top-floor button just as Marcus lunged forward to grab her collar.

The heavy doors slammed shut with a metallic bang, missing Marcus’s outstretched fingers by a fraction of an inch. Maya collapsed against the back wall of the metal car, sliding down to the floor as the elevator rocketed upward with bone-jarring speed, leaving the sounds of the gala far behind.

She caught her breath, wiping the blood and water from her face, only to realize the digital floor indicator had bypassed the penthouse entirely and was rapidly descending into the subterranean sub-basement.
