Chapter 5 - The Trap Closes

The sprawling financial spreadsheets illuminated the dark ballroom in an unforgiving, ghostly white glow. Whispers erupted into full-blown panic among the remaining executives and board members as they read the damning wire transfers scrolling across the giant monitors. Evangeline stood frozen beneath the glaring light, her glittering gold sequins looking less like a symbol of wealth and more like armor made of fool's gold. Her chest rose and fell in rapid, shallow gasps, her carefully constructed empire collapsing in real-time.
“This is a digital fabrication,” Evangeline hissed, her voice losing its polished cadence, replaced by a shrill, venomous edge. She spun around to face the gathering crowd, her eyes wide with desperation. “Julian has lost his mind! Since his health declined last year, he’s been fabricating conspiracies to cover up his own corporate embezzlement!”
“The signatures are verified by blockchain ledger technology, Miss Sterling,” a calm, automated voice chimed from the room’s integrated audio system. It was the Vance Foundation’s artificial intelligence security protocol, completely bypassing human override. “All transfer logs have been backed up to an immutable federal server.”
Maya stepped back, her boots clicking softly against the shattered glass that still littered the floor. The weight of the decoy flash drive in her hem felt like an anchor pulling her down into a world she never wanted to enter. She looked at Julian, seeing not just a wealthy billionaire, but a tired, grieving father who had fought a lonely war for years. But even as the trap closed around Evangeline, a sickening feeling twisted in Maya’s gut. People cornered like wild animals rarely went down quietly.
Evangeline’s hand slipped slowly behind her back, her fingers dipping into the small, beaded clutch hanging from her wrist. The refined socialite persona vanished completely, replaced by a cold, calculating survival instinct. “You think you’ve won, Julian? You’ve just signed your daughter’s death warrant.”
Before Julian could react, Evangeline yanked a heavy, encrypted satellite jammer from her bag and slammed it onto the marble floor. A sharp, high-pitched squeal pierced the air. Instantly, the giant screens flickered black, the emergency lights died, and the room was plunged into absolute, suffocating darkness once more.
“Maya! Stay down!” Julian shouted, his voice cut short by the sound of a heavy body crashing against furniture.
Maya dropped to her knees instinctively, her hands pressing against the sticky, champagne-soaked floor. The air grew thick with the smell of ozone and sudden violence. Scuffling sounds echoed through the gloom—heavy boots, tearing fabric, and the sickening thud of a fist hitting flesh.
“Julian!” Maya cried out, crawling blindly across the floor through shards of broken crystal that bit deep into her palms.
“I’m... I’m here,” Julian’s voice strained from somewhere near the base of the central pillar, sounding weaker, ragged with pain.
Maya reached out in the dark, her fingers brushing against the rough fabric of a tuxedo sleeve. She grabbed it, pulling herself forward, but her hand slipped on something warm and wet. She pulled her fingers back, bringing them close to her face in the faint green glow of a nearby exit sign.
Blood. Bright, fresh, and undeniable.
At that exact moment, the emergency power kicked back on with a loud hum.
May you like
Julian slumped against the marble pillar, clutching his side where a dark crimson stain was rapidly spreading across his white shirt. Standing over him, holding a small, silver-plated letter opener dripping with blood, was not Evangeline, but the hotel’s head of security, who smiled down coldly at Maya.
