Chapter 3 - Darkness and Deception

The crystal chandeliers flickered once, twice, and then died completely, plunging the opulent ballroom into an eerie, shadowy twilight illuminated only by the faint glow of emergency exit signs. Panic rippled through the trapped guests, muffled shouts bouncing off the marble pillars as people fumbled for their phones. Maya stumbled backward in the sudden gloom, her hand still tingling from Julian’s grip. The silver tray lay forgotten on the floor, buried beneath shattered glass.

“Stay close to me,” Julian ordered, his voice cutting through the rising tide of murmurs with practiced authority. His hand found her shoulder, guiding her firmly behind him as the sound of heavy footsteps echoed toward the service corridor.

In the sudden chaos, Evangeline had vanished into the pitch black. She moved swiftly, her designer gown whispering against the carpet as she navigated the VIP hallway toward the private security office. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. The transfer records—the digital paper trail proving she had systematically drained the Vance Foundation’s philanthropic reserves over the past five years—were stored on the terminal inside. If Julian’s newfound daughter had inherited his stubborn investigative instincts, those files would be uncovered by morning.

Back in the ballroom, emergency backup generators kicked in with a low, mechanical hum, casting a sickly yellow hue over the room. Maya blinked against the harsh transition, shaking off Julian’s hand as a wave of overwhelming skepticism washed over her.

“Stop acting like my father,” Maya said, her voice steadying as she backed away from the older man. “Just because you know about my mother doesn’t give you the right to put on a public spectacle. People are staring, and I’m just trying to pay my rent.”

Julian looked at her with a profound, unyielding sadness that stopped her mid-sentence. “Your mother didn’t just leave you a necklace, Maya. She left a warning. She told me years ago that if anything ever happened to her, our enemies would come for you next. Tonight wasn’t an accident. That girl in the gold dress—Evangeline—she didn’t just bump into you by chance.”

Maya’s eyes widened. She replayed the exact moment of the collision in her mind. The way Evangeline had shifted her weight at the last possible second, the predatory gleam in her eyes before the tray went flying. “She did it on purpose?”

“She wanted to test you, or perhaps eliminate the threat before you even knew you were one,” Julian replied quietly, pulling a heavy brass key from his tuxedo pocket. “And now that the truth is out in the open, we are running out of time.”

Before Maya could demand answers about the millions of dollars at stake, a sharp, metallic crash echoed from the hallway outside the private elevator, followed by a muffled cry of pain.

Julian’s head snapped toward the sound. He drew a small, heavy silver flash drive from his breast pocket and pressed it urgently into Maya’s palm. “Take this. If I don’t walk out of this hotel tonight, give it to the federal prosecutor whose name is on the back.”
