Chapter 2 - The Bloodline Revealed

The ballroom erupted into chaotic murmurs, the quiet dignity of the charity event instantly dissolving into a hurricane of speculation and whispered gossip. Maya remained on her knees, the sharp edges of the shattered champagne flutes dangerously close to her trembling fingers. Julian did not offer her a hand; instead, his piercing gaze remained locked on her face, tracing the familiar lines of her jaw and the distinct shape of her eyes. He had spent twenty-two years searching for the child hidden away by a desperate mother, and now, fate had dropped her directly onto his expensive marble floor.
“Julian, this is absurd! You cannot simply claim some random catering staff because of a misplaced sense of grief!” Evangeline forced her way forward, her gold sequins catching the light as she tried to project absolute confidence. Despite her sharp tone, the rapid, shallow rise and fall of her beaded shoulder chains betrayed her panic. She had spent a decade positioning herself as the sole logical heir to the Vance dynasty, and a clumsy waitress was threatening to erase everything she had stolen.
Julian turned his head slowly, his eyes narrowing as he looked at Evangeline. The older man’s expression grew colder, the warmth of the gala completely draining from his features. “My memory is remarkably sharp, Evangeline. I know the exact shape of my bloodline when I see it. Security, clear this room immediately. No one leaves the building.”
“You can’t hold us hostage over a melodramatic stunt!” a prominent city councilman protested, taking a step backward as two burly security guards flanked the grand double doors.
Maya finally found her voice, though it came out as a breathless rasp. “Mr. Vance, there’s some kind of mistake. I need to get back to the kitchen before the manager fires me. I don’t know anything about being your daughter.”
Julian knelt down beside her, ignoring the sticky champagne soaking into the knees of his bespoke trousers. He reached out, his calloused fingers gently catching her wrist before she could pull away. The touch was firm, undeniable, and filled with a heavy, sorrowful weight. “Your mother’s name was Elena, wasn’t it? She wore a silver pendant with a broken compass. You left it in your locker downstairs.”
Maya’s breath hitched. How could he possibly know about the necklace her mother had left her before passing away six months ago? It was a secret she had never shared with a single soul in this city.
Evangeline watched the exchange, her face twisting into a mask of pure fury and calculated desperation. She pressed the phone tighter against her ear, whispering fiercely into the device while backing away toward the shadows of the exit. “Find the offshore accounts now. If Julian legalizes her heritage tonight, we are all going to prison.”

As the heavy oak doors of the ballroom began to close, locking the elite guests inside with the newly revealed family drama, Julian helped Maya to her feet. But before he could utter another word, the emergency lights of the hotel flickered violently, plunging the entire floor into sudden, suffocating darkness.
