Chapter 4 - The Stolen Flash Drive

The cold metal of the flash drive felt impossibly heavy in Maya’s palm, a stark contrast to the lightweight silver tray she had been carrying just twenty minutes ago. The emergency generator hummed overhead, casting long, distorted shadows across the marble floor. Around them, the elite guests were beginning to demand answers, their initial shock giving way to indignant anger as hotel security blocked the exits.
“I’m not taking this,” Maya whispered, trying to push the small device back toward him. “I don’t even know what’s on it! Why are you trusting a stranger you met five minutes ago?”
Julian caught her hand, his grip unyielding, his dark eyes filled with an intense, desperate sincerity. “Because you have your mother’s eyes, Maya. And more importantly, you have her integrity. Everyone else in this room is wearing a mask paid for by stolen money. You are the only person here who cannot be bought.”
A sharp rap on the reinforced glass door of the service exit drew their attention. Through the frosted pane, a silhouette of a man in a dark tactical jacket flickered into view, holding a small digital scanner. Evangeline’s hired clean-up crew had arrived, and they were systematically hunting down loose ends.
“Hide that drive inside your uniform lining—now,” Julian commanded, turning his body to shield her from the view of the gathering crowd. He raised his voice so the nearby guests could hear. “Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize for the abrupt disruption. Security is handling a minor electrical fault. Please make your way toward the east terrace for private transport.”
Maya’s hands shook as she tucked the flash drive deep into the hidden hem of her black service top. Her mind raced with a dozen terrifying possibilities. Just an hour ago, her biggest problem was passing her corporate finance midterm; now, she was an unwilling participant in a high-stakes corporate war involving billions of dollars, murder, and corporate espionage.
As the crowd began to shuffle nervously toward the terrace, a familiar voice cut through the murmurs.
“Julian? What on earth is happening?” Evangeline reappeared from the service hallway, her hair slightly disheveled, though her glittering gold gown remained immaculate. She slipped back into the room with practiced grace, her eyes darting between Julian and Maya like a hawk tracking a wounded rabbit. “The guests are terrified. You can’t just turn a charity gala into a hostage situation over a clumsy waitress.”
Julian didn’t blink. He stepped smoothly in front of Maya, blocking Evangeline’s line of sight. “The gala is over, Evangeline. And the audit of the foundation’s accounts begins first thing tomorrow morning.”
Evangeline’s smile didn’t reach her eyes; instead, her lips tightened into a thin, dangerous line. “An audit? Surely you jest. The board would never approve an independent review without my explicit authorization as managing director.”
“The board won’t need to approve it,” a cold, synthesized voice echoed from the public address system overhead.
The main screens lining the ballroom wall suddenly flickered to life, glowing with a bright, blinding white light. A series of high-resolution financial spreadsheets materialized across the giant displays, listing offshore bank accounts, forged signatures, and millions of dollars routed directly to a shell company registered under Evangeline’s private name.
Evangeline froze, her face turning the color of ash as she stared up at the screen.
Maya gasped, looking down at the flash drive hidden in her lining, realizing the device in her pocket was only a decoy.

Julian smiled grimly, turning back to face the woman who thought she had won. “The system uploaded the files the second you logged into the terminal downstairs, Evangeline. Your time is up.”
