Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The air inside the grand ballroom of the Zenith Hotel smelled faintly of imported caviar, expensive perfume, and old money. Underneath the cascading crystal chandeliers, hundred-dollar bills might as well have been fluttering through the air, given the sheer concentration of wealth gathered for the annual Vance Foundation gala. Maya adjusted her neat hair bun, the tight strands pulling slightly at her scalp as she balanced the cold, heavy silver tray. Her black service top felt damp against her back from the relentless humidity of the crowded room and her own mounting anxiety. She was just a college student trying to pay tuition, navigating a world where she clearly did not belong.
Her eyes focused ahead, tracking a clear path through the sea of tuxedoes and designer gowns. Without warning, a sharp pivot from a passing cluster of laughing executives forced her to swerve. Her low-heeled shoe caught the edge of a thick, imported Persian rug. The momentum shifted instantly. Maya stumbled forward, her arms flailing as she desperately tried to save the stack of crystal flutes.
The woman in the glittering gold sequin gown did not move out of the way. In fact, Maya’s shoulder clipped her sharply.
The silver tray tilted violently. With a deafening cascade of tinkling glass and gasps, dozens of crystal flutes slammed onto the Italian marble floor, shattering into a thousand glittering shards while golden champagne sprayed across the pristine white shoes of nearby guests.
Maya dropped to her knees immediately, her palms pressing directly into the wet, sticky mess of spilled wine and broken glass. She stared in horror at the destruction, her chest heaving as tears welled up in her eyes.
“Oh god,” Maya whispered softly, her voice trembling with sheer panic.
A heavy silence fell over the immediate vicinity, the rich music from the live string quartet suddenly feeling entirely out of place.
From the raised dais at the front of the ballroom, Julian Vance—the formidable patriarch of the city's most ruthless real estate empire—strode down the polished marble steps with absolute authority. His sharp black tuxedo and crisp bow tie seemed forged from iron. He stopped mere feet from the kneeling waitress, ignoring the ruined flooring completely, and looked sternly across the stunned crowd.
“She is my daughter,” Julian announced, his deep voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room.
Maya froze on the floor, glass biting into her skin, her breath catching in her throat as she stared up at the man who had just claimed her.
Across the room, the woman in the gold sequin gown—Evangeline Sterling—paled instantly. Her hand trembled as she brought her smartphone up to her ear, staring with wide, terrified eyes into the brightly lit space.

“They found the transfer records?” Evangeline whispered into the receiver, her voice shaking with deep emotional shock. “Run.”
