Chapter 6 - The Security Breach

The harsh overhead lights revealed a scene straight out of a nightmare. Julian Vance slumped against the cold marble pillar, his breathing shallow and rattling, his hands desperately trying to stem the flow of dark blood soaking through his tuxedo. Standing directly above him, the head of security—a massive man named Vance had trusted for over a decade—wiped the bloody letter opener casually against his pant leg.
Maya froze, her hands covered in Julian’s blood, the metallic scent filling her lungs and making her feel violently ill. “What... what did you do?” she choked out, her voice barely a whisper against the hum of the restarting air conditioning.
The security chief didn’t flinch. He cast a cold, indifferent glance down at the bleeding billionaire before turning his deadpan eyes toward Maya. “Mr. Vance was a liability to the board. Some legacies need to be pruned before they ruin the entire garden.”
From the shadows near the service exit, Evangeline stepped back into the light. Her gold sequin gown caught the harsh white illumination, but her composure was entirely shattered. Her mascara was smeared, and her hands shook violently as she stared at Julian’s motionless form. She hadn't ordered a murder; she had only wanted the files erased.
“I—I didn’t tell him to do that,” Evangeline stammered, her voice cracking as she took a frightened step backward. “Marcus, you fool! You were only supposed to intimidate him!”
Marcus, the security chief, let out a low, humorless chuckle. “Intimidation doesn’t pay off offshore accounts, Miss Sterling. The board wants a clean slate, and with Julian dead, the emergency succession clause activates immediately. You get your empire, and I get my retirement fund.”
Maya’s mind raced through the terror. She was trapped in a locked ballroom with a corrupt security officer who had just stabbed a billionaire, and a terrified accomplice who was just as likely to turn a gun on her to eliminate the last witness. Her hand drifted instinctively to the hem of her black top, where the decoy flash drive was hidden. If Marcus searched her, he would find it, and she would end up just like Julian.
Julian stirred weakly, his heavy eyelids fluttering open. He reached out a blood-stained hand, his fingers brushing Maya’s wrist with a final, desperate surge of strength. “The... the vault in my study,” Julian whispered, coughing up a small bubble of crimson. “Use... use your mother’s birthday... 04-12-85... it’s the only way.”
“Shut him up!” Evangeline shrieked, panic finally overwhelming her polished facade.
Marcus took a deliberate step toward them, his heavy boots crunching loudly over the shattered champagne flutes. He drew a suppressed automatic pistol from his shoulder holster, the matte black metal gleaming wickedly under the lights. “End of the line, kid. Hand over whatever old man Vance gave you, and maybe I’ll make it as quick as his.”
Maya’s heart hammered against her ribs with deafening intensity. She backed away until her spine hit the heavy glass doors of the terrace, finding them locked tight from the outside. There was nowhere left to run, no escape route, and no cavalry coming to save them.

With a sudden burst of adrenaline, Maya snatched a heavy, half-empty bottle of champagne off a nearby tray and hurled it directly at the overhead emergency sprinkler pipe, shattering the glass bulb with a deafening crash.
