Chapter 9: The Long Night Hours

The heavy oak doors of the master wing slammed shut, echoing through the sprawling estate and signaling Clara’s retreat into her fortified domain. In the bright white kitchen, the air felt lighter, though the gravity of the impending morning hung heavily over the three remaining adults. Arthur Pendelton sank onto one of the velvet stools, rubbing his temples with trembling fingers as the adrenaline of his confrontation with Clara finally faded.

"She won't sleep tonight," Arthur murmured, staring down at the polished marble counter. "Clara has contingency plans within contingency plans. If she realizes she can't win in probate court tomorrow, she will try to liquidate the overseas accounts before the federal freeze takes full effect at sunrise."

"The forensic freeze we initiated at five o'clock covers international wire transfers as well as domestic assets," Mark replied, leaning against the edge of the counter next to Julianna. He kept his voice low so as not to disturb the baby, who was breathing softly against Julianna’s chest. "She's boxed in. Every digital ledger is locked."

Julianna looked down at her daughter, her thumb gently tracing the edge of the pink blanket. "It’s hard to believe this is our life now. A few hours ago, we were playing our parts at that suffocating gala, smiling for cameras that didn't care about us, pretending everything was perfect."

"Perfection is an expensive illusion," Mark said softly, his dark eyes meeting hers with a warmth that cut through the sterile brightness of the kitchen. "Sometimes it takes a crisis to strip away the varnish and show you what's actually real."

Arthur looked up, offering a tired, knowing smile. "Your father knew what he was doing when he appointed Mark to audit the estate three months ago, Julianna. He saw the cracks forming long before any of us were willing to admit they were there."

"You knew?" Julianna asked, looking at Mark with genuine surprise.

"I suspected," Mark admitted. "Your father hired me under strict confidentiality to trace where the estate funds were drifting. Clara had been shifting capital into private shell accounts for over a year, ostensibly for 'expansion,' but the paper trail led directly to personal holdings."

" embezzlement," Arthur whispered, shaking his head slowly. "If that comes out in court tomorrow, Clara isn't just losing custody control—she’s looking at criminal indictments."

Julianna felt a cold knot form in her stomach. Despite everything Clara had put her through, the thought of her sister facing criminal charges brought no sense of triumph, only a deep, melancholic sorrow. "Can we stop that part? Can we settle it without destroying her completely?"

"That depends entirely on how she behaves when the judge reads the master file tomorrow," Mark answered honestly. "We offer her a clean exit, but she has to take it."
