Chapter 3: Fractured Alibis

The kitchen lights seemed to hum louder as Officer Miller clicked his ballpoint pen, the sharp sound punctuating the heavy silence. He rested the bottom of his clipboard against the edge of the pristine white counter, glancing between Mark, Julianna, and Clara. The festive balloons tied to the refrigerator door swayed gently in the draft from the open terrace, a surreal backdrop for an official investigation.
"Let's start with the basics," Officer Miller said, his tone professional yet probing. "Mr. Sterling, what is your exact relationship to this household? According to the registry for this property, this estate belongs solely to Clara Vance and her late husband's estate."
Mark adjusted his grip on the infant, who had fallen back into a restless sleep against his chest. "I am a legal consultant and a family friend," Mark answered evenly. "My presence here was requested by Julianna to help navigate a sudden change in living arrangements."
Clara scoffed audibly, stepping forward into the pool of light. "A consultant? That is a polite way of saying he is an opportunist, Officer. Mark has been advising my sister behind my back, trying to help her break the custody agreement we established months ago. She signed those papers voluntarily."
"Under duress," Julianna countered, her voice trembling with a surge of renewed strength. She stepped closer to Mark, her hand hovering protectively near the baby's tiny foot. "You threatened to cut off my access to our family trust, Clara. You said if I didn't hand over primary care, I would walk away with nothing."
"You were unfit, Julianna," Clara replied coldly, her gaze hardening. "You spent months in treatment. The court agreed with me."
Officer Miller held up a hand, silencing the escalating argument before it could spiral out of control. "Save the domestic grievances for family court. Right now, I am looking at a child welfare call that names both of you in an escalating dispute. Furthermore, Mr. Sterling, your name is not on the approved visitor list for this residence, given the current restraining orders tied to this property."
Mark’s jaw tightened. "There is no active restraining order prohibiting me from being here at Julianna's invitation."
"There is an injunction filed three days ago by Ms. Vance's legal team," Miller said, tapping the clipboard. "Which means you are trespassing, sir."
Julianna looked up at Mark in sheer disbelief. "You didn't tell me about an injunction."
"Because it was filed in bad faith to lock us out," Mark replied quickly, keeping his voice steady to reassure her. "It hasn't been served properly yet."
Officer Miller sighed, stepping back and reaching for his radio clipped to his shoulder. "Step away from the baby, Mr. Sterling. I need to call for backup and a social worker to evaluate proper placement for the infant tonight. Protocol requires temporary protective custody until a judge can review the injunction in the morning."

"No!" Julianna screamed softly, the sound breaking with profound grief. She lunged forward, grabbing the edge of Officer Miller's uniform sleeve. "You can't take her. She’s my daughter. Look at her—she’s healthy, she’s loved. Clara is doing this out of malice!"
Clara watched the scene unfold with an expression of cold detachment, her arms still crossed over her sparkly gown. "It's for the best, Julianna. You're just making it harder on yourself."
